Forward-looking technical debt - the hidden cost of AI hesitation
Main content (©cherezoff - canva.com) We talk endlessly about ‘technical debt’ — the accumulated cost of past shortcuts, and delayed upgrades. But a more insidious problem is emerging that few organizations recognize — forward-looking technical debt. This is the cost of inaction in the face of fundamental technological shifts, and it's accumulating faster than any legacy system ever could. While companies debate whether to adopt AI, the decision window is closing.
AI hesitation is creating a new form of technical debt
Much of the current AI conversation is centred on experimentation: which applications to test, which departments to prioritise, how to manage exposure. Those discussions are necessary. But they overlook a more structural consequence of delay. Technical debt is a familiar concept across enterprise IT. It arises from legacy platforms, short-term fixes and postponed upgrades. Over time, it constrains agility and increases cost. Eventually, it demands remediation.

The great GenAI trade-off: Balancing responsiveness with responsibility
Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle tells us there is trade-off between certainties of measurement. The more accurately we measure position, the less accurately we can measure momentum, and vice versa. Artificial intelligence (AI) suffers from a similar balancing act between responsive and responsible AI. Business leaders want insights before competitors come to the same conclusions. But they are also faced with appeasing customers, employees, investors, and regulators on the issue of responsible AI.
L’era dell’intelligenza artificiale sta iniziando, ma siamo pronti?
Siamo pronti a entrare nell’era dell’intelligenza artificiale?
Why CIOs are the data guardians of the AI age
In an era of rapid technological advances, CIOs have a huge responsibility in managing enterprise data to boost growth and innovation, says ServiceNow’s Adam Spearing. The proliferation and accessibility of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) applications are increasing by the day.

Low-code and soft skills - a recipe for success
(Pixabay) Since the start of the pandemic, timelines of many digital transformation strategies have been accelerated from years to months. In order to keep pace with change and maintain business velocity, businesses have needed to build solutions quickly to meet demands and scale with confidence. Banks, for example, are rising to the challenge by digitising front-line operations to meet increased demand for loan requests.

Pressing restart – how businesses can recover and get back to work
COVID-19 has caused profound disruption, like never seen before in our lifetimes. The way in which we interact, socialise and work with each other has been completely rewritten. Businesses of every size from every sector are facing seismic shifts in the way they need to operate and serve their customers. Throughout the period of lockdown, many organisations have found digital services indispensable in keeping some degree of operations running.
Getting a grip on enterprise wearable apps
While the market for wearable devices is arguably just getting started, few would contend that there’s plenty of time for enterprise development teams to get a grip on the wave of new devices heading into their organisations. Consider this: The analyst firm IHS estimates that more than 180 million wearable devices are likely to be sold in 2018, up from 50 million anticipated to sell this year.
Can IT deliver on mounting business expectations for increased AI?
Companies must create a clear AI roadmap that accounts for early learning curves, and know that this will turn into customer insights, says Salesforce’s Adam Spearing. There was a time when customers were surprised and delighted every time they received a personalised engagement with a brand — emails with dynamic content, tailored ads and product recommendations at the bottom of the page.
Opinion: IT comes in from the cold - building apps for a brighter future
We’ve all heard stories of harassed IT staff who spend all day trying to keep the metaphorical lights on. In fact, you could argue that an on-premise IT system is old the very day after you buy it. What’s more, if your existing infrastructure can’t keep up with the needs of your users, then you’re in danger of shadow IT appearing as staff use their own resources to develop solutions. This raises serious concerns over security, control of your IT systems and, most importantly, IT spending.
