Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

The Burlington Free Press invited local high schoolers to report and write for a weekly Teen Page. It changed my life.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, and not ironically. Applying for colleges back in the day required one in order to fill out all the required forms.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To me, it means telling the story in a fair, accurate, engaging, and professional way.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

No more than two lines. And please make it something relevant to my beat areas that hasn't already been covered by everyone else.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

A laptop computer, a smart phone, a USB digital recorder, a USB transcription pedal, a paper, a mechanical pencil, and my brain.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter. Hard to believe I once resisted joining.
