WRB-Children’s Literature Supplement, June 2023
’Tis June! Blessed time of the Sacred Heart, the beginning of summer, and the month of Sarah’s birthday. She loves her birthday so dearly that, in order to see if it was indeed the exact middle of the year, she once woke her long-suffering sister up to help count the days. Alas, she’s 16 days too early. But enough about birthdays—there are books to be read! From literature about fathers to fairy tales to folklore, there’s something for everyone here.

So how does this writer-illustrator malarky actually WORK? How can you survive in the business? These days it’s all about replication. I’ll tell you something very few people know: Sarah McIntyre is actually four people. I’m one Sarah in a fleet of Sarahs: Our parents always wanted a successful writer-illustrator in the family, and planned ahead. The magic number seems to be four, so they went to a certain clinic and did what they had to do, ensuring four identical children.
When Things Go Wrong
I don’t have much time for curses, jinxes and superstitions. To be honest, I like it when things go wrong! In fact, I think accidents are often how we end up with our best stuff, and I try to be as open to them as I can. That’s something I’ve learned through writing, and photography. The picture above is a double exposure – a case where I forgot to wind the camera on, and pressed the shutter twice instead of once, as you normally would.
What I Loved Then & Still Love Now…
I’ve written before on this blog about Watership Down, and how it was a huge inspiration in the writing of Varjak Paw. With my new book Phoenix, I’ve gone back to some of my other early inspirations. As a child, growing up in the 1970s, I was fascinated by space. Space exploration was a huge thing, and the Apollo and Soyuz missions were making people everywhere look up at the skies, and wonder. I loved to see space stories on TV in Star Trek and Doctor Who, and in films like Star Wars.
Arctic Adventures & Outer Space
When I finished writing The Outlaw Varjak Paw, I knew very little about my next book. I was sure of only two things. First, it would not be a Varjak Paw book; I wanted to do something completely different. Second, I had an idea for a story about someone who goes on an epic journey to the end of the world. But I had no idea who this person would be, or what it would feel like to do such a thing. While writing my books, I’d also been working as a film journalist.
DFB website ~ Blog " Blog Archive " SF Said: Monamy the cat
I was an only child, and grew up in London with a single mum. I had many relatives in other countries, and lots of friends at school, but home life was always very quiet and solitary. All this changed when I was 11, because that was when we got a cat, who soon became like a brother to me: the best little brother I could imagine. He was a tiny kitten when we first got him, just a few weeks old, small enough to sit in the palm of your hand.
WRITING THE OUTLAW VARJAK PAW
I never set out to write more than one Varjak Paw book. I started with the story of a kitten coming into his power, growing into a cat – and for me, that story ends at the end of Varjak Paw. But writing it, I’d found all sorts of questions that I couldn’t answer in one book. Take Sally Bones, boss of the meanest gang of streets cats in town. Varjak had made a terrible enemy there; what was going to happen when he went back to the city? It was clear that I was going to have to write a sequel.
The Best Books on Greek Myths and Mythology
What is a Greek myth? What is it about Greek mythology that has attracted us down the ages? A Greek myth is basically a way of explaining the world, or it was a way of explaining the world to a primitive people who didn’t have any explanation of the sun or the moon or the disasters that happened — like earthquakes and floods and fire. It was easy to make a myth about it, and to say that it was down to the gods.
