Obsidian hydration dating by infrared transmission spectroscopy

INTRODUCTION The obsidian hydration dating method for archaeology was developed in the late 1950s (Friedman & Smith, 1960). It was based on the preparation of a geological thin section for the measurement of hydration layer thickness by high-magnification (600–1000×) optical microscopy. Conversion of the layer to age relied principally on external calibration with independent dating methods such as radiocarbon.

Agriculture origins continue to be one of the biggest issues in archaeology today. Understanding how humanity modified plants (and animals), to the point of being considered “domestic” makes us wonder about the nexus between human demography, climatic changes and population-resource relations. Our work focused on a topic much less studied and related to the question – why did farming dispersion stop and then generate a frontier between food- producers and hunter-gatherers?
