What was your first job as a journalist?
My first job as a journalist was working for a small newspaper. I was responsible for covering local news and events. It was a great way to learn the ropes of journalism and get my foot in the door of the industry.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Ah, the sound of a typewriter. I remember my dad used to have one when I was a kid. It's been a while since I've used one, but I did use one recently for a story I was writing. They're definitely nostalgic and fun to use, but I think we can all agree that they're not the most efficient way to write nowadays.
How is social media changing news?
Social media is changing news by making it more accessible to people all over the world. It's also made it easier for journalists to find and share stories. However, social media can also be a double-edged sword. With so much information available at our fingertips, it can be difficult to sift through everything and find the most important stories. It's important to be thoughtful and discerning about the news we consume on social media.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
I have to say, Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man. I've always been a big fan of comic books and superhero movies, so it's no surprise that my favorite fictional journalist is also a superhero. I admire his determination to get the story, even if it means putting himself in danger. He's also a great example of how journalists can use their platform to make a difference in the world.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
To me, being a journalist means using my platform to raise awareness about important issues and make a difference in the world. It's also about being curious and constantly learning. I always strive to improve my craft and tell the best stories possible.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
I think the funniest news-related hashtag I've seen is #FirstWorldProblems. This is usually used to describe relatively minor problems in the grand scheme of things but can still be frustrating. It's a lighthearted way to poke fun at the first world and our privilege.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I prefer to be pitched on stories via email. I like to have all the information in one place so I can easily refer back to it. I also think it's important to include a brief summary of the story and why you think it would be a good fit for my publication.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
As a journalist, I use various tools to do my job. I often use social media to find and share stories. I also use Google Sheets and Docs to manage my work. And, of course, I couldn't do my job without my trusty laptop!
What's your favorite social network?
I'm a big fan of Instagram. I love being able to share photos and stories with my friends and followers. I also enjoy Linkedin and Facebook, but Instagram is definitely my favorite social network.
Who do you wish followed you?
I wish more people followed me on social media! But in all seriousness, I think it would be cool if some of my favorite journalists and writers followed me. I also wouldn't mind if a few more celebrities and public figures followed me. It would be nice to interact more with them on social media.
Why did you become a journalist?
I became a journalist because I want to make a difference in the world. I also love to write, and I'm curious about everything. Journalism allows me to combine my two passions and use my skills to tell meaningful stories.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I did work for my high school newspaper. I was a reporter, and I covered a variety of stories, from sports to news to feature pieces. I really enjoyed getting to know my classmates and telling their stories. It was a great way to learn about journalism and hone my writing skills.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I'm most proud of the stories I've written that have positively impacted my community. I love using my platform to raise awareness about important issues and make a difference in the world. It's always gratifying to know that my work is making a positive impact, even if it's just in a small way.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
As an aspiring journalist myself, I would advise others to be persistent and patient. The field of journalism is very competitive, so it's important to stand out from the crowd. Passion and determination are key in this business. Never give up on your dream of becoming a journalist!
When's the best time to pitch you?
The best time to pitch me is usually in the morning after I've had a chance to wake up and get settled into my workday. I'm also usually available for pitches in the evening after I've wrapped up my work for the day. If you're pitching me on the weekend, please keep in mind that I may not be available to respond as promptly.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
The best pitch I ever got was for a story about a local business doing something unique and exciting. The out-of-the-box thinking of the business really intrigued me, and I thought it would make for a great story. Being in a saturated niche, it's always nice to see businesses thinking outside the box to stand out from the crowd.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
The generic "press release" is the worst pitch I ever got. These are usually sent out en masse and don't provide any real information about the story or why it would be a good fit for my publication. I delete these emails without even reading them.
What's your favorite drink?
When working, I often enjoy a cup of coffee or tea. I also like trying different types of beer, wine, and spirits from all over the world.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
You can usually find me out and about exploring my city when I'm not at a computer. I love to walk around and discover new places. I also like to travel and learn about different cultures. Hopping from country to country is one of my favorite things to do!
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I really enjoy reading The New York Times and Entrepreneur. I also like to read various other online and print publications. I think it's important to be well-rounded and informed about what's going on in the world.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
I think the most common misperception about my beat is that it's all doom and gloom. While there are certainly some challenges that come with covering hard news, I also get to write about a lot of inspiring stories and people. It's important to remember that there is always hope, even in the darkest of times.
