UMass varsity teams: a source of student debt or school pride?
Let’s state the obvious here: The University of Massachusetts has never been known for its athletic prowess. Ignoring the basketball team’s (vacated) Final Four appearance 20 years ago, at the best of times, athletics at UMass can be described as average, if not slightly below average, compared to other large state schools in the United States.
General Joseph Hooker, war hero and famous Hadley resident, under attack
If you’ve ever been to the Massachusetts State House in Boston, chances are you walked past or entered through the “General Hooker Entrance,” which is located on the Boston Common side of the building. The entrance is named after Hadley’s own General Joseph Hooker, a major general for the Union during the Civil War. Widely known for his aggressive fighting style, General “Fighting Joe” Hooker was an inspirational leader to the men he led during the Civil War.
Sports gatherings bring students together
"UMass students need events where they can come together as a whole and, with sports teams that are subpar (to say the least), the Super Bowl is one of the few opportunities we have." There are only three certainties in life: death, taxes and University of Massachusetts riots after major Boston sporting events.

Massachusetts Daily Collegian "The Massachusetts Daily Collegian is the independent student-operated newspaper at the University of Massachusetts Amherst that has been serving the UMass community since 1890. It is published daily Monday through Thursday during the calendar semester. The Collegian has the most comprehensive print and online coverage of UMass news and campus related events.
The department of Judaic Studies makes a disappointing decision
On Wednesday, November 29, two academic discussions were held at the University of Massachusetts on the topics of anti-Semitism and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The events happened at the same time, 7 p.m., in different buildings, a physical separation representative of the ideological divide between the discussions.
The Boston Police Department is robbing taxpayers blind
Earlier this year, the city of Boston released their annual employee earnings statistics for 2016, which included salaries for big names like Mayor Marty Walsh and Boston Public Schools Superintendent Tommy Chang. Although the earnings report itself isn’t very newsworthy, the top 50 highest earning city employees came as a substantial shock to many. All 50 of the city’s top earners were employed by the Boston Police Department, and the vast majority of them are detectives.
I’m sick of the University not prioritizing our healthcare
If you’re a germaphobe like me, you know that college is a cesspool of disease. Every doorknob, elevator button, table and faucet on campus is covered in bacteria and viruses waiting to attack your immune system. Why do you think every lecture is full of sneezing, coughing and sniffling? Catching a cold in Amherst is almost guaranteed. Quality medical care at University Health Services should be too.
