Dani Isaacsohn and Aimee Dirig Opinion contributors Workforce issues seem to be hitting the headlines less in recent weeks as jobs are added to the economy, unemployment drops, and the labor force participation rate ticks up. It is clear an economic recovery is well under way, but the benefits of that recovery have been unevenly distributed. There are over a million fewer women in the workforce than there were pre-pandemic, and Black women have been returning to the labor force at slower rates.

Everyone seems to be talking about the labor force these days: not enough people to operate buses, wait tables, build houses, or ship appliances. Yes, the economy is recovering steadily from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. July’s Cincinnati regional jobs report showed the continuation of anticipated gains in certain industries as well as decreased unemployment overall, but there are clear indicators that a complete comeback in the labor market remains far off.
