What was your first job as a journalist?
At the Riverfront Times in St. Louis. I was lucky: they hired me right out of journalism school.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Hildy Johnson in "His Girl Friday"
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
My iPhone. Also Google docs and our paper's blog software.
Why did you become a journalist?
I was going to be a novelist, but it turned out I was better at listening to people and writing down what they said than at making stuff up.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Yes. I edited the features and in-depth pages and developed bad writing habits it took years to un-learn.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
"The Electric Pencil," a story about a mental hospital patient in the 40s and 50s who was a great outsider artist.
