Who is protecting Waterloo Region’s water?
The thought of running out of water is alarming and understandably sends many of us into a state of panic. I’m familiar with this anxiety. It’s one of the reasons why I got into politics. I know there is urgent work to be done to ensure our communities have what they need to thrive. In our region, the Ford government has recklessly approved an excess of water-taking permits — fast-tracking the process by ramming Bill 60 through the legislature.
Homelessness ends with housing: A call for solutions to Ontario’s homelessness crisis
Last year, research by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario revealed a staggering statistic: more than 80,000 people in Ontario are without housing, a number expected to surge to 300,000 by 2035 without intervention. Countless individuals have visited our offices describing the chain of events that led them to homelessness. Seniors on fixed incomes suddenly facing unmanageable rent increases.

Waterloo Catholic board will promote hate if it bans Pride flags
On April 28, the Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) will vote on a motion, put forward by trustee Conrad Stanley, to ban the flying of Pride flags at schools. Any consideration by WCDSB trustees to stop flying the Pride flag at our schools is an affront to our commitment to equity, diversity, and respect in our schools.
I was recently in Amsterdam where wheelchairs and mobility scooters are a common part of the traffic flow on bike and roll routes. This is also starting to happen in many other cities. Netherland’s laws welcome this, and laws are changing in other jurisdictions. This shift is puncturing the misleading narrative used by those who weaponize disability in favour of maintaining automobile dominance.
Ontario planning experts slam Ford's war on bike lanes
Opposition continues to pour in over Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s fight against bike lanes. The Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI), with over 5,000 members, sent a letter to the government opposing new legislation that could remove bike lanes in Toronto or any other municipality.
Has buying beer and wine at the corner store changed lives in Ontario? Probably not.
While some increased convenience for busy families is nice, Ontario government leaders need to start grappling with some much bigger issues —now that they have finally returned to work at Queen’s Park after a long summer break — tackling issues like access to affordable homes, help with still-rising food costs and lowering utility bills. And then, there is that whole climate change thing that looms over our communities like a rapidly growing black cloud.
Doug Ford’s bike lane plan is taking us backwards
Given the state of healthcare, housing and various other crumbling systems in Ontario, I didn’t have “ban bike lanes” on my bingo card of Premier Doug Ford’s priorities. But increasingly, it feels as if everything I care about in this province is under attack by the Ford government — from climate action to childcare to housing to, now, cycling.
Doug Ford doesn’t have a climate plan Original
A few weeks ago, one of my kids celebrated their eighth-grade graduation. It was an exciting milestone for our family, and at the ceremony I spoke to so many bright kids excited to finish elementary school and embrace the opportunities and challenges that come along with adolescence. It’s a shame that for so many of those graduating, their last weeks of school were spent in sweltering classrooms with no reliable air conditioning, with classroom temperatures reaching into the 30s.
When it comes to protecting Ontario's renters, the only roadblock is the premier himself
I made the jump into politics because I wanted my kids to have a livable future. What I didn't realize was that part of that would mean fighting to ensure that when they grow up, they'll have a place to live. Due to the housing crisis many things that my generation took for granted - finding an affordable apartment, saving up for a down payment - are now totally out of reach for an entire generation. Aislinn Clancy is a Green Party of Ontario deputy leader and the MPP for Kitchener Centre.

Ontario Pension Giant May Be Getting the Memo on Fossil Divestment, Members Say
As the burning of fossil fuels presents us with yet another summer of catastrophic impacts, the pressure is growing for pension funds to either phase out their oil, gas, coal, and pipeline assets or explain how they’re aligned with a safe retirement future for their beneficiaries. And Canada’s seventh-largest fund, the C$121-billion Ontario Municipal Employees’ Retirement System (OMERS), may be getting the memo, three of its members write for Corporate Knights.

Opinion | Sen. Rosa Galvez is crafting policy for transparency in financial sector
How are our financial institutions doing in the quest to decarbonize finance? The pressure is on. Citizens are demanding that their governments, and now financial institutions become more transparent about how they interact with the oil and gas sector. As the climate crisis intensifies, and the pledges to cut emissions grow, people want to know if investors and banks are keeping their promises of cutting emissions or greenwashing to protect the status quo.
Opinion | This campaign has forgotten climate change
During this provincial campaign, many issues have been raised. However, most of the parties have not shared much about their plan to tackle the climate crisis. Is it because the public is apathetic to this concern, the most important issue of our time? It is described by David Attenborough as “our greatest threat in thousands of years.” You would think it is worthy of attention. Let’s look at how Ontario has done so far.
