At one point in my career, I spent a good portion of my day in transit. The roughly 8 miles between my home in McLean and the World Bank in downtown Washington, D.C., often took more than 45 minutes each way. When I viewed my commute as time to get through, I saw traffic as an inconvenience and a crowded metro train as uncomfortable. I wanted to get to work faster and home faster, reclaiming those minutes for something useful. Looking back, I realize the commute did useful work of its own.
