Where is the West?
For a region of the United States that comprises over 23% of the population, this region has been grossly underrepresented in Washington and Lee’s recent incoming classes. For the class of 2030, just 6% of the class came from the West. That number stood at just 5% the year before for the class of 2029. It may be convenient to just dismiss this phenomenon as due to a lack of awareness from West Coasters about the school.

The Department of Education Must Go — The W&L Spectator
Early in his term, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to effectively close the Department of Education, ordering the secretary of education “to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education and return authority over education to the States and local communities.” Trump’s efforts continue a trend throughout modern American history where conservatives have sought to eliminate the Department, famously arising from President Reagan’s desire to have the Department...
Yale Professor Addresses Birthright Citizenship and Constitution — The W&L Spectator
“Subject to the jurisdiction thereof” represents the main point of content when it comes to evaluating the constitutionality of birthright citizenship. Professor Keith Whittington spent considerable time discussing this phrase, its backings in English common law, and application throughout American history in his Constitution Day talk on September 18, 2025 in W&L’s Northen Auditorium. Whittington serves as the founding chair for the Freedom Alliance Academic Committee.
India-America: The Greatest Alliance That Never Was — The W&L Spectator
When it comes to trade negotiations, the president does have valid grievances with the steep Indian tariffs. Yet, President Trump must realize that getting a “leg up” on India would be disastrous economically and geopolitically: simply empowering China and hindering American power projection in a potential conflict with China. Erasing a trade deficit is not more important than having an economic and political ally that can help the U.S. counter its geopolitical rival.
NYT Writers Discuss Research On Trump's Business Career — The W&L Spectator
Donald Trump’s “father set him up in business, bankrolled his earliest projects, co-signed on his loans, [and] gave him more money when the project started losing money,” remarked Russ Buettner in Washington and Lee University’s Stackhouse Theater on March 25, 2025. New York Times and Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporters Russ Buettner and Susanne Craig have focused on President Donald Trump’s personal finances and business career since 2016.
Former Congressmen Share Thoughts on Legislating in Polarized Times — The W&L Spectator
Morel then asked the Congressmen, “In what ways is Congress not as bad as it looks?” Payne answered that “Congress is actually full of people who are really hard-working” and that members generally “care about the country.” Payne argued that the institution “suffers because it has no advocates,” as individual Congressmen often run on how broken Congress is.

Stephen Towns came to campus to talk about his art as a part of an exhibition that would last from February 17 to March 14, 2025.

The prompt, “Resolved: Monuments that are perceived as symbols of oppression should be removed from public spaces,” was the topic for a Braver Angels debate held in Marshall Hall at Virginia Military Institute on February 4th, 2025. The event functioned like a parliamentary debate, with affirmative speeches and negative speeches pertaining to the topic, and the opportunity to ask questions to the speakers.
Wake Forest Politics Professor Gives MLK Day Address — The W&L Spectator
“He was a leader and a critically important media figure who understood how his use of the powerful tool that is the American media was critical for pushing forward the actual philosophical goals,” said Dr. Harris-Perry of MLK on January 20, 2025 at the Keller Theatre in W&L’s Lenfest Center. The discussion began by examining the extremely close polling margin between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. The polls indicated that either candidate could win any of the swing states given the tight margins.
