My earliest memories of Fort Snelling started out with me hearing stories of my grandfather who passed away in 1885 — almost 40 years before I was born in 1923. He fought in the Civil War, and my family told stories of him traveling from Dennison, Minn., where he lived, to come to Fort Snelling to join the Second Company of Minnesota Sharpshooters. That was where he entered the service. As a child, my parents would take us kids up to Fort Snelling occasionally to visit.
