Alabama Peanuts: Making Pest Decisions In Late Fields
Although many crops are close to harvest and treating those crops may not make sense, the drought conditions in the eastern half of the state have worsened in recent weeks which is very favorable for insect pests (both chewing and sucking insects). Plenty of peanuts remain in the ground, and those close to maturity should be harvested when ready.
Moving Grain: Panama Canal Maintenance, Toll Proposal
Panama Canal Lock Maintenance Tentatively Scheduled, Reduces Transit Capacity The East Lane of the Gatun Panamax Locks on the Panama Canal will be closed for 10 hours, for maintenance and repair work, on August 20, 2019. The estimated transit capacity of the Canal due to the maintenance work is 28–30 vessels per day, rather than the normal transit capacity of 32–34 vessels, depending on vessel mix and other factors. At this time, no major delays are anticipated.
Alabama Peanuts: Wet Fall Contributes to Low pH and Zinc Toxicity
Split stems are a symptom of zinc toxicity in peanut. Photo: Alabama Cooperative Extension Several Alabama producers have observed “spotty” areas in peanut fields containing plants which are severely stunted and have split-stems, which are typical symptoms of zinc toxicity. A wet fall and winter may have contributed to this issue. Maintaining soil pH is arguably the most important management practice for improving soil fertility for crop production.
Georgia Cotton: When Should You Terminate PGR Applications?
Cotton is moving along as many of us county agents were at the National Association of County Agents meeting last week in Chattanooga. It was raining up there about as much as it was here. This can cause an issue with our PGR applications as the mepiquat chloride products have 8 hrs. Generally, when a surfactant is used, we can cut the rainfast in half. Pentia is more expensive, but with a 2 hour rainfast (1 hr with surfactant), it may help us when it’s wet.
Alabama Peanuts: Snails and Slugs in Fields
There have been many producer complaints about snail and slug issues in row crops. Snails and slugs can cause direct crop damage and contamination in severe cases. Snails produce an acidic material from their foot that dissolves calcium in the soil and allows production of the shell. There are a few other publications listed at the end of this article that may be of help to understand basic biology and identification characteristics for snails/slugs.
