Al'amin Umar’s Biography

Al’amin Umar is a senior specialised reporter at HumAngle Media, where his work explores the intersecting human costs of climate change and conflict, particularly on vulnerable communities such as the displaced, women, and children, in northeast Nigeria and the wider Lake Chad region.

Over the past three years, he has reported how communities in terror-controlled territories face severe water scarcity due to drought and how women, burdened with the responsibility of fetching water, venture into fragile settings, risking harm and abduction. He has also reported how energy poverty worsens deforestation and how women who venture into the forest to collect wood risk abduction.

Al'amin has also reported how the lost of livelihood by displaced, drought-hit farmers venture into rosewood smuggling. He has also reported how terrorists tax drought-hit farmers and also engage in wildlife smuggling in the Sambisa forest to finance their operations.

Fluent in Kanuri, Hausa, and English, Al'amin is versatile in accessing and engaging communities within the region.
