Better Politics Are Possible
by TJ Rooney and Alan Novak If you watch cable news, if you’re on social media, if you get political ads, you’ve seen how brutal politics can be. The negativity in politics is pervasive and relentless, making it seem like there’s no room for compromise and that the two sides have nothing in common. However, if you look beyond the fringes of the political spectrum, you’ll find a significant point of agreement: the urgent need for campaigns to change.

Opinion | Want to help resolve American political dysfunction? Allow open primary elections.
Alan Novak was chairman of the Pennsylvania Republican Party from 1996 to 2004. T.J. Rooney was chairman of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party from 2003 to 2010 and a state representative from 1993 to 2006. The list of politicians facing primary challenges in 2022 keeps growing. Republican Govs. Brian Kemp of Georgia, Greg Abbott of Texas and Mike DeWine of Ohio each will face challenges, as will Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) for the sin of putting the American public over their party.
Mail-in ballots do not favor one political party over another | Opinion
By Alan Novak and T.J. Rooney Our country is in the midst of turmoil and political unrest. Many Americans have never lived through a time where our country has felt this divided and fractured. Not only has the political process broken down and become more partisan than ever before, we are physically separated from one another because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Novak & Rooney: There has to be a better way to conduct presidential primaries
Here we go again. The controversy over the Iowa caucus results – or lack thereof – shines a bright light on questions around how we select our presidential candidates. The emphasis and power on small states such as Iowa and New Hampshire in narrowing the field is the political version of Bill Murray’s "Groundhog Day" – the same absurdity, over and over, again and again. There has to be a better, more inclusive way to select, or rather eliminate presidential candidates.

Give independents more say in state elections
As the Pennsylvania General Assembly heads back to Harrisburg to take up the commonwealth’s business later this month, a priority for its fall agenda should be passing Senate Bill 300. This proposal would enable Pennsylvania’s unaffiliated voters to have a voice in casting votes on either the Republican or Democrat party ballots on primary election day.
China Sneezed and the Mining Industry Caught Pneumonia - Emerson Automation Experts
As noted in a recent Financial Post article, the world’s largest mining companies have fallen on hard times. Since 2011, global mining stocks have lost $1.4 trillion in value; more than the value of Apple, Exxon Mobil and Google combined. A few charts of the underlying commodities and related company stocks show just how bad it has been. So what caused the decline? A combination of factors.
And now, the Democrats take center stage
T.J. Rooney and Alan Novak review the GOP convention and look ahead to this week's gathering of Democrats. T.J. Rooney is a former chairman of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party Alan Novak is a former chairman of the Republican Party of Pennsylvania Rooney: I believe you are going to see a much, much, much different convention in virtually every way. The goal for Hillary Clinton will be to continue what has occurred since she has become the presumptive nominee.
Commentary: Can Trump, Clinton unite their parties?
Currents political commentators T.J. Rooney and Alan Novak discuss if presumptive nominees Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton can unite their respective parties and build campaigns that produce coattails that benefit other candidates. Rooney: It is clear after Indiana that Sen. Bernie Sanders intends to continue to campaign and, as he says, take his candidacy and delegates to the convention. That is all fine and fair.
Commentary: What to watch for in Pa. primary
Currents political commentators Alan Novak and T.J. Rooney on what to look for in Tuesday's Pennsylvania primary, from the top of the ticket to local races. Novak: I am just fascinated by the run-up to the Republican convention. I'll be watching which of the unbound delegates get elected in each congressional district. Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, and John Kasich are all reaching out, schmoozing, and working to get representatives to gatherings where delegates might attend.
Commentary: In Pa., winning bigger by aiming smaller?
Currents political commentators T.J. Rooney and Alan Novak assess the state of the presidential race leading up to next week's Pennsylvania primary. Rooney: Like many things in this year's primary election on both sides, we can expect the unexpected. In this moment in time it appears that Donald Trump has a very commanding lead over his two Republican challengers.
