Exploring the Bay Area's Hidden Tunnel Art

Exploring the Bay Area's Hidden Tunnel Art

KQED-TV (San Francisco, CA) — In the East Bay, hidden in thick trees and brush, lies a portal to another world. It's down below the streets in a creek bed, where the mouth of a storm sewer opens up like a cavern. Inside, crawdads scuttle in ankle-deep pools, and ominous booming sounds echo throughout the vaulted interior.

Peace Corps Volunteer Suffers From Effects of Anti-Malaria Drug Long After Service

prx.org — Mefloquine, also known by the brand name Lariam, is an anti-malarial drug that has been prescribed to Peace Corps Volunteers since 1989. Mefloquine is effective at preventing malaria, but some believe that the adverse side effects of the drug may be just as dangerous as malaria itself. Sara Thompson served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Burkina Faso from 2010 to 2012. She experienced serious adverse side effects from Mefloquine use during service, and the side effects did not end when she stopped taking the drug.

After a Million Miles, BART Cars Are Hella Old

After a Million Miles, BART Cars Are Hella Old

KQED-FM (San Jose, CA) — Think back to September 1972. "The Godfather" was the top movie in theaters. Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again (Naturally)" topped the charts. M*A*S*H kicked off its 11-year run on TV. And President Richard Nixon, just months after five people were arrested for breaking into Democratic campaign offices in Washington, D.C.'s Watergate office complex, sought re-election against Sen. George McGovern. And on Sept. 11, the Bay Area Rapid Transit system opened for business. Now fast-forward more than 43 years, and many of those original BART cars are still in use. Many of them have logged over 1 million miles.

Small Team of Divers Helps Keep Port of Oakland Running Smoothly

KQED-FM (San Jose, CA) — In 2015, more than 2 million cargo containers moved through the Port of Oakland. After those containers are offloaded from cargo ships, they are stacked onto large decks until they can be loaded onto trucks, trains or ships and shipped out. Those decks are essentially massive piers, built over water on thousands of vertical concrete supports called piles. These piles - approximately 28,000 of them - are the critical unseen system that supports all cargo activities at the port. This critical pile system is managed and maintained by a small team of four divers, who spend most of their time inspecting and repairing them.

How Two Oakland Restaurants Are Dealing With Higher Minimum Wage

How Two Oakland Restaurants Are Dealing With Higher Minimum Wage

KQED-FM (San Jose, CA) — When Measure FF passed in Oakland last November, raising the city's minimum wage to $12.25 an hour, restaurant owners were faced with difficult decisions. Other Bay Area cities, including San Francisco, have passed minimum wage laws that are being phased in over several years. But Measure FF took full effect on March 1, suddenly raising the minimum wage in Oakland by $3.25 an hour. This 36 percent hike was the highest percent increase in the nation at that time. "Restaurants operate on extremely tight margins as it is," said Chris Hillyard, co-owner of Farley's Coffee, which has three Bay Area locations, one in Oakland.
