Albert P'Rayan’s Biography

Dr Albert P’Rayan is an academic, English Language Teaching (ELT) professional, teacher trainer, media critic, and education columnist. He holds a PhD in Linguistics and certificates in Critical Thinking in Language Learning and Teaching from the University of Oregon, USA, and TESOL Methodology from the University of Maryland (UMBC), USA.
With over 25 years of college-level teaching experience in India and abroad, Dr Rayan brings a wealth of expertise to his work.
For 17 years, he wrote the weekly column English Blues for The New Indian Express, contributing over 800 articles on the English language and ELT. These have been compiled into books by the newspaper. He also writes the Wide Angle column and lead articles on education for The Hindu Education Plus, with over 150 articles published. A selection of his work is available at MuckRack. As part of the #IndiaReads movement, he contributes the weekly column Reading Right in The Hindu in School.
Dr Rayan served as editor of the Journal of ELT, published by the English Language Teachers’ Association of India (ELTAI), for three years. During this period, he interviewed leading linguists and ELT experts, including Noam Chomsky, Stephen Krashen, David Nunan, Scott Thornbury, and Alan Maley.
As an ELT resource person, he has conducted workshops across India on topics such as ELT, reading, grammar instruction, classroom management, 21st-century skills, integrating AI in ELT, critical thinking, creative writing, and media education.
Dr Rayan finds deep fulfilment in engaging with teachers and students, fostering a culture of learning and growth.
