Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first paid position was with a now-defunct hyperlocal news organization called TownNewsToday my second semester of college.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I used to write nonsense with my dad's old typewriter from the 80s.

How is social media changing news?

Social media is giving news to us at a second's notice - as soon as something happens, you don't even need a reporter to tell you.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

The American Girl Kit Kittredge started my desire, Lois Lane solidified it.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Being a journalist is being completely truthful. It's telling the world what they need to hear, not what they want to hear.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I use my iPhone for pictures, videos, and recordings (and other media), my Canon PowerShot SX500, and a small notepad that I keep in my bag.

What's your favorite social network?

I enjoy Twitter for its fast pace and good humor, but I also really like Instagram for beautiful images.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I was a contributor for my high school's paper, The Chieftain. I did feature stories, editorials, entertainment reviews, and general news.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

I'm by no means a pro, but I'd say continuing to write and cultivate your craft and your mission helps a lot with finding your niche.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Catch me at any time and I'll get back to you eventually.

What's your favorite drink?

Starbucks iced white chocolate mocha! In the winter, I like the peppermint version.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

At Chipotle, ordering something to eat so I can go back to my computer and not miss a meal.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I can't get enough of Teen Vogue - people write it off as a vapid "teen gurl mag" but the content is visually striking and thought-provoking.
