New Insights into Microbial Nitrogen Utilization in the Rumen Enabled by Genome-Resolved Multi-Omics
Abstract Optimizing nitrogen (N) utilization in ruminant production systems holds both economic and environmental significance. However, traditional paradigms of N metabolism, derived primarily from well-studied model rumen bacteria, cannot fully capture the diverse and complex N metabolic dynamics within the rumen ecosystem.
Effect of Feed Intake and Calcium Salts of Palm Oil Inclusion on Growth Performance and Carcass Characteristics of Feedlot Finishing Steers
Katelyn Steffens Fifty-nine Angus×SimAngus-crossbred steers [body weight (BW) 279 ± 16 kg] were used to evaluate the effect of different dry matter intake (DMI; FS) with or without the inclusion of palm oil calcium salts (4% dry matter basis; CSPO) on growth and carcass characteristics of feedlot steers. Steers were blocked by BW and randomly assigned to individual pens.
Short communication: A comparison between two glucose measurement methods in beef steers during a glucose tolerance test
Loading metrics Open Access Peer-reviewed Research Article Abstract Glucose tolerance tests (GTT) are commonly performed in beef cattle to evaluate the glucose-insulin signaling pathway. Blood samples are obtained via a catheter and then transferred back to the laboratory for further analysis. A hand-held glucometer used chute-side can make performing GTT’s and quantifying blood glucose concentration much easier and faster for research purposes.
The Cost of Mud to the Beef Cow
Since the mid 1990’s, Ohio has experienced an increase in the number of precipitation events greater than 2 inches (Frankson and Kunkel, 2017), with winter rainfall increasing and snowfall decreasing (Hayhoe et al., 2010). Winter and spring precipitation are expected to increase 20 – 30% further by the end of the century (Hayhoe et al, 2010) and summer precipitation is expected to remain the same or decrease slightly (Wuebbles and Hayhoe, 2004).
