Alex Crevar

Alex Crevar is a writer and editor. He has reported travel stories as a regular contributor for publications such as the New York Times, National Geographic Travel, and Lonely Planet magazine for more than 20 years. In that time, Crevar has written articles about destinations in North America, South America, Asia, Africa, and Europe.

Crevar started his career as a feature profile writer for magazines, covering politicians, business leaders, sports standouts, entertainers, and inspirational figures. In the years following his first stint in the Balkans—in the late 1990s, in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina—he began working as a travel reporter. His process remains the same. He adheres to a journalist’s ethic: taking meticulous notes, sitting down for interviews with locals, and filing about places with which he has become intimate.

Over the last decade, Crevar has worked to merge two concepts: sustainable tourism and responsible travel journalism. He consults tourism organizations and operators to develop best practices and was instrumental in the creation of the Via Dinarica hiking trail, which traverses all eight countries of the Western Balkans region and acts a cultural corridor across Southeastern European. As well as serving as a guest lecturer at universities, Crevar teaches pro bono workshops in countries around the world to share the craft of travel journalism with students in developing tourism markets.

Crevar is an avid cyclist and adores music. His belongings fit neatly into one duffel. He lives in Zagreb, Croatia.
