1 Introduction Functional communication training (FCT) is often used to treat challenging behavior by (a) identifying functional reinforcers that maintain challenging behavior through functional analysis, (b) teaching an alternative functional communication response (FCR), and (c) differentially reinforcing the FCR. The FCT literature is vast, with numerous systematic and meta-analytic reviews supporting its effectiveness and efficacy for an appreciable range of clinical populations and outcomes.
