2014. Nuclear Security Trends on the Korean Peninsula. Growing Dynamics
We can observe a trend toward adaptation, as leading powers adjust their approaches to the reality of North Korea’s de facto nuclear status. This shift also extends to the Trump administration, writes Alexander Vorontsov. In Russian diplomacy, the term “Korean Peninsula Nuclear Problem” (KNP) had become established by the time of the Six-Party Talks (2003–2009).

A Positive Agenda - Valdai Club
North Korea, for the first time since the existence of the Russian Federation, has become a more important partner for Moscow on the Korean Peninsula than South Korea, which, albeit without enthusiasm, was forced to implement Western economic sanctions against Russia, Alexander Vorontsov writes. During the summit at the Vostochny cosmodrome on September 13, 2023, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un invited Vladimir Putin to visit Pyongyang, and Russia’s president accepted.

How to Interpret North Korea’s Nuclear Forces Policy Act?
An important event occurred at the 14th Supreme People’s Assembly (SPA) of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), which was immediately thrust into a harsh spotlight worldwide: passing the DPRK Nuclear Force Policy Act. This document has both an international law dimension, as it concerns the global non-proliferation regime, and a regional dimension tied to the modalities of the political and military situation on the Korean Peninsula, and how it has been evolving.
North Korea Got It Covered
Over the past two or three years, media outlets all across the globe have been emphasizing North Korea’s growing isolation from the outside world, marking the country’s inevitable economic slump, which may potentially lead to the dissolution of the state. The economic siege appears to come from two fronts: international sanctions and sanctions initiated by individual countries, primarily the United States, which have been comprehensible since 2017.
A public oversight Meduza looked into Moscow’s Public Monitoring Commission and found rampant connections to the security business — Meduza
On April 6, the Russian Civic Chamber’s Council removed human rights activist Marina Litvinovich from Moscow’s Public Monitoring Commission (ONK), an organization tasked with overseeing the observance of prisoners’ rights. Allegedly, Litvinovich’s exclusion came in response to “multiple Ethics Code violations” she had committed.
Unpacking a US Decision to Use Force Against North Korea: Issues, Options, and Consequences | 38 North: Informed Analysis of North Korea
Although there is no formula for evaluating the likely efficacy of using force against North Korea, there are a number of factors, dilemmas, and trade-offs that should be considered. It is often hard to predict the physical effects of any use of force because there are multiple uncertainties. Even more difficult and important is the need to estimate the political impact that the damage will produce. Short of an all-out war, this is the paramount question.
Is the U.S. Preparing for Preventive War? Here's What North Korea Really Thinks.
Is the U.S. Preparing for Preventive War? Here's What North Korea Really Thinks. In mid-November 2017, I spent several days in Pyongyang talking to DPRK foreign ministry officials about the prospects of war between North Korea and the United States. These were sobering discussions. All of my interlocutors made it clear that while North Korea does not want war, it will not hide from it either.

The Regime Strikes Back: A New Era of North Korean Information Controls | 38 North: Informed Analysis of North Korea
Nearly every North Korea watcher will tell you that the famine of the mid-1990’s fundamentally altered North Korean society and the economy. The collapse of the socialist economy crippled the state’s ability to provide for its citizens, thus forcing individuals, including many who were part of the North’s vast security apparatus, to find other ways to survive.
Translating a Noun into a Verb Pyongyang Style: The Case of North Korea’s New Cruise Missile
It looks like North Korea is now in the cruise missile business. Talk about translating a noun into a verb. Although most of our attention has been focused on the many kinds of ballistic missiles that North Korea builds, tests and too often sells, modern cruise missiles are a new and potentially destabilizing addition to North Korea’s missile arsenal. Rumors began circulating a week ago, starting with the Chosun Ilbo, that a North Korean propaganda film had surfaced showing a new cruise missile.
The Potential Institutional Consequences of Deeper UN Actions against North Korea
As a Korea specialist who regularly visits both North and South Korea (at least annually) and speaks with high-ranking officials, among others, I have noticed a disturbing trend over the last several months.
