Victory! Nonpartisan Civic Engagement Groups Allowed to Educate and Register New Citizens
At the end of 2025, the Trump administration implemented an unlawful policy blocking nonpartisan civic engagement groups from registering new citizens to vote at administrative naturalization ceremonies. This blatant attempt to silence the voices of Americans has been temporarily blocked following a lawsuit filed by Campaign Legal Center on behalf of the national League of Women Voters (LWV) and a number of state and local Leagues.
Victory for D.C. Voters! Citizen-Led Ballot Initiative Adopting Ranked Choice Voting Upheld
In the November 2024 election, an overwhelming majority of voters in Washington, D.C. voted to pass Initiative 83 (I-83), which introduced ranked choice voting and semi-open primaries for elections in the District of Columbia. Campaign Legal Center, on behalf of our clients who proposed and supported I-83, has successfully defended the will of the voters in court against baseless claims that I-83 is unlawful.
Protecting the Rights of Civic Engagement Groups Helping America’s Newest Citizens Vote
The Trump administration is making it harder for newly naturalized citizens to exercise their freedom to vote. Voters and democracy would be better off with ranked choice voting Original
Exploring critical issues facing our democracy and searching for solutions. Americans have ample reason to be concerned about democracy these days, and worries about misinformation, voter access and more are common as the November election approaches. Even so, it’s also an exciting time for democracy. Efforts to make our elections more responsive to voters are gaining momentum, offering hope for a political system that better serves everyone.
CLC Complaint Seeks to Address Bipartisan Usage of Deceptive “Pop-Up” Super PACs
Campaign Legal Center (CLC) has filed a complaint against a group of 23 super PACs, including groups tied to both Democratic and Republican leadership, for working to conceal their affiliation from American voters. The super PACs at the heart of this complaint are so-called “pop-up” super PACs. Despite being mostly or entirely funded by a D.C-based super PAC with ties to party leadership, these groups presented themselves to voters as local groups, utilizing names that suggested local ties.
Maine Misses Chance to Fight Foreign Election Interference
Last week, Maine missed an opportunity to combat foreign interference in its elections and further build confidence in its electoral process. After the state legislature passed LD 194, a bipartisan bill that would prohibit foreign governments and foreign government-owned corporations from spending to influence state and local ballot measure elections, the governor vetoed the bill and the legislature failed to override the veto.

On May 19, 2021, Campaign Legal Center (CLC) filed suit against the Federal Election Commission (FEC) over its yearlong failure to enforce federal law against Big Tent Project Fund (Big Tent Project), which undermined voters’ right to know who is paying to influence our votes and our government. Big Tent Project was a Democratic nonprofit group which used secret money—otherwise known as dark money—to try to achieve its major purpose of defeating Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign.
CLC Calls for Investigation of Shell Corporation Donation to Pro-Susan Collins Super PAC
A newly-created Hawaii Limited Lability Corporation (LLC) appears to have illegally laundered $150,000 in funds from unknown sources to a Maine super PAC supporting U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, new campaign finance records show. The facts are strikingly similar to those that led to the arrest of Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman. The Society of Young Women Scientist and Engineers, LLC (SYWSE) was formed in late November in Hawaii.
Momentum to Restore Voting Rights Continues as More States Move Legislation Forward
Thanks to a recent burst of legislation, thousands of Americans may soon regain the most fundamental right of citizenship, the right to vote. Inspired in part by Florida’s November 2018 referendum, and thanks to years of committed advocacy by local groups, public opinion has shifted in favor of restoring voting rights to citizens who have past convictions. The increase in the number of bills shows the breadth of the movement to disentangle the criminal justice system from the ballot box.
