This Valentine’s Day I Can’t Wait To Celebrate The Real Me
I take this itty-bitty heart-shaped cookie cutter that I have and I go mad with it. I stamp hearts out of watermelon and hearts out of their sandwiches. I heart stamp their toast in the morning, and I heart out their afternoon snack before I pack them in their backpacks. I heart the entire house with red and white crepe paper streamers and heart notes taped to their bathroom mirror. I celebrate them and heart them because before them I thought that I had to be what people wanted me to be.
Betsy DeVos Is NOT The Right Choice For Education Secretary
Chip Somodevilla / Getty Images I am watching Betsy DeVos’s hearing on C-SPAN. I reach for my Christmas present slipper and hold it up in the air, aiming for the screen. My husband hears me shout from the kitchen, “This is wrong! She is wrong! She has not taught and is not an educator. She does not support public education. What she is, is someone who has given millions to the Republican party!” $200 million to the Republican party, to be exact. My husband tells me not to give myself a heart attack.
This Valentine's Day I Can't Wait To Celebrate The Real Me
I celebrate my family on Valentine’s Day.
The Empty Chairs at the Table
The holidays will never be the same again. Top Ten lists are great. When I see a "10 Easy Ways to ..." article, I always click on it, because I want easy. I want tried and true. I want someone to tell me how to do something with guaranteed results. I wish there was a "10 Easy Ways to Survive the First Holiday Without the One You Love" link I could click on this holiday season. To be honest, I'd settle for 5 ways.
10 Things to Really Like About Getting Older
At just about any age, we make up our minds just how happy we want to be. There are the days of childhood, where we whine that we just want to be all grown up, so we can do what we want. When we're in college, we want to graduate so we can work and have money already. When we're working, we dream about the day we can finally retire. If we sit down and ponder just what it is we like about the very stage of life we're in, it's not very hard to find some jewel moments.
All the Wrong Words to Say at College Drop Off
I had memorized every word the night before and it would be perfect. By 2:19 a.m., I knew exactly what I was going to say and do when we dropped off our oldest son at college the following day. I would stand before my child, like the Virgin Mary. Offering gentle outstretched hands with my head leaning just slightly to the side, I would pull my son in close. Reaching up to smooth his hair, his trusting eyes would search out mine.
How Our Society Raises Young Boys - And What I’m Doing To Change That
I’ve been told that I take things beyond where they need to go. Getting up from a comfortable position on the sofa — and living in Wisconsin, that means removing a warm quilt off my lap — I will walk across a room and in front of my three children, without saying a word, pick up the remote to change the channel if a commercial comes on that demeans women.
Apparel Industry Stands by the Higg Index
It’s hard to imagine two brands more different than Walmart and Patagonia, yet in 2009 they aligned their unique strengths and issued a call to the industry. In an invitation to some of the world’s largest retailers, then Walmart chief merchandising officer, John Fleming, and Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard proposed an industry collaboration unlike any attempted before. The idea was to join competitors together to develop an index to measure the environmental impact of their products.
Should Parents Be
YES! By Marcelle Soviero When my oldest daughter turned fourteen, she fought every rule I made, and acted out considerably and dangerously. I knew something had to change if she was going to stay safe, make better choices, and if we were ever going to sit in the same room together again. Because I only had control over my own behavior, that’s what I changed. I chose to be my daughter’s friend, to cut down on the naysaying and rule-setting.
