Working freelance for the Salish Current.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Communicate clearly and with honest intentions, and it will mean something to somebody.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
With as much honest excitement as you can! I love to hear about the stories that people truly care about.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
A voice recorder, extensive notes, patient persistence, and lots of time.
Why did you become a journalist?
To make the world a better place.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
In college, I was EIC of The Planet! (In high school, the newspaper was called "coffee break")
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I'm proud of my time with Maritime Washington, where I traveled the many miles of Washington's coastline and met incredible people.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Meeting someone incredible to talk about something they hold dear.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
People think environment and maritime stories are about "what was." I show that they're about "what is" and "will be."
