Destination Europe
Their personal situations are so desperate that they risk everything, including their lives, to attempt a hellish sea crossing packed in overcrowded stinking boats, with hopes of a better life somehow in Europe. These people, determined to leave unbearable conditions in their home countries in Africa, are at the center of this long-term documentary story by photojournalist Jason Florio. While the migrant crisis ebbs and flows from view in the public eye, its issues continue to multiply and evolve.

Butterflies Are a Sign of a Good Thing
“Butterflies Are a Sign of a Good Thing” is an observational research project focusing on women living in Accra, the capital of Ghana, and its surrounding neighborhoods. The series focuses on the local women’s methods of survival, which often includes sex work, and how minors struggle to avoid entering prostitution themselves; sometimes a difficult prospect in a place that offers few economic opportunities.
Iranian Fathers & Daughters - Photographs and text by Nafise Motlaq | LensCulture
This is a series of portraits of Iranian fathers and daughters in different social classes in Tehran and other cities. The photos were made in their home environments. I asked each of the young women to give a short statement about their fathers; they can be read in the captions. From the first time we saw this series, we were fascinated by the images and by Nafise Motlaq’s ability to reach across different levels of Iranian society.
Amazon B-Side - Photographs and text by Fernanda Frazão | LensCulture
Working with travel photography over the past few years, I have been able to experience tourism in its many dimensions. One of the aspects that fascinates me most is its democratization. In the last decade, the Brazilian middle-class increased its expenditure on tourism by 277%. Leisure travel, besides becoming more frequent, is now more accessible to a wider public. In the past, such travel was a privilege reserved for the economic elite, but today the picture has changed.
From the End of the Analog Era to the Enduring Wilderness - Photographs by Robert BurleyInterview by John K. Grande | LensCulture
As an artist working in photography, Robert Burley has sought to describe and interpret the built environment in which he lives. He is also interested in the history of the photographic medium itself, especially as it is the principal means through which he engages with the world. Among other projects, Burley spent 10 years traveling the globe, looking at the destruction of film-based photography institutions, many of which had stood for over a century: Kodak, Polaroid, Agfa, Ilford, and others.
Ukraine Revolution 2014 in Color
The Ukrainian Revolution of 2014 escalated quickly after months of relatively peaceful anti-government protests, with a massive civil uprising and armed clashes in the capital city Kiev beginning on February 18, 2014. At least 82 people were killed over the following few days, including 13 policemen; more than 1,100 people were injured. Within a few short days, the conflict lead to the downfall of the government of President Viktor Yanukovych and the setting up of a new government to replace it.
