Why did you become a journalist?

To see and try to understand many more lives than my own.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

To get the best story, rely on seeing things for yourself as much as possible. Spend time researching—and understanding— every angle.

What's your favorite drink?

Anything with caffeine.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That coverage of the Syrian conflict and refugee crisis are black and white.
