A Fitting Farewell at the St Andrews 2026 Graduation Ball
Although for many students, graduation marks the official end of their time at St Andrews, Graduation Ball feels like the emotional ending. Held on Lower College Lawn on 4 July and billed as a final celebration of friendships and memories, the event delivered exactly what most graduates were looking for: one last opportunity to enjoy The Bubble before stepping into their next chapter. The evening's greatest strength was undoubtedly its atmosphere.
Review: I'll Be Your Webcam
A modern reinterpretation of the Velvet Underground’s 1967 Album What happens when a group of 13 St Andrews students reinterpret the 1967 album The Velvet Underground & Nico? On April 2, I’ll Be Your Webcam was performed in the McPherson recital room by a group of talented musicians, singers, and composers. I was particularly enthusiastic about this performance, as the Velvet Underground is one of my favourite bands of all time.
The Dark Enlightenment
The rising anti-democratic culture of the alt-right Lovers of culture and activists often treat culture as a battlefield where progressive art, media, and pedagogy automatically counter fascism — until they read about the Dark Enlightenment, an anti‑democratic, anti‑egalitarian philosophy that arose in online forums in the late 2000s.
Sex and Shame at the Boots Counter: 'Hard Pill' Review
On Wednesday 5th of November, I went to see the penultimate performance of People You Know’s Hardpill, written by Loulou Sloss, directed by Sofia Hattiagadi and produced by Olga Blanco. The play was hosted at the Heritage Museum on North Street, in an intimate setting where the audience was facing a very faithful reproduction of the Boots Pharmacy set up.
Against Routine: On Writing Habits of Famous Authors
Does a writing habit actually shape how creative and efficient our writing will be? For a while, I tried incorporating the Artist’s Way into my routine and writing in stream of consciousness, but it felt more like journaling a therapy session every morning. And the truth is, as a non-morning person, my brain can’t function properly before 11am. I am more of a night owl, and so are many authors. Balzac would drink 50 cups of coffee a day and famously would write from 1am to 7am.
Erotica Liberates Women More than Romance
Romance novels are traditionally linked to the trivial, the mundane, to be made fun of as cheesy, but they are inherently political in the way they deal with love. They portray female self-fulfilment as a reward for longing, rather than giving into their urges, made clear through the achievement of stability through love. In a way, they are written to comfort women by domesticating desire. Where romance ends in resolution, safety, marriage, and tidy arcs, erotica lingers in tension and uncertainty.
Bourdain and Parts Unknown of Street Food: On the phenomenology of experiencing life through food
I recently rewatched Jûzô Itami’s 1985 movie Tampopo, a classic movie about the mediation of food and human existence. Tampopo’s noodle shop becomes a ‘community project’, where eating ramen is not just about flavour — but posture, timing, and ritual. The ramen master teaches how to approach the bowl, caress the pork, apologise to the noodles, and savour slowly.
Meet Your 2024 Sabbs
The University of St Andrews Students’ Association, referred to as the Union, was created to provide support and representation to students. Six elected Sabbatical Officers work full-time to address students’ priorities, respond to their concerns, and enhance their university experience. They are elected by the student body each year in the Candlemas semester, and are former or current students of the University taking a year out of their studies to work solely for the Union.

Founded in 1933, the Byre continues to serve as an important centre of the arts for students and community members alike. New Advert for Bus Scheme Launched
In a statement issued on 23 February, the University of St Andrews announced it would be showcasing its success in saving 600 tonnes of carbon in the last year through a bus-side advertising scheme in partnership with Stagecoach. Apart from being a response to the cost-of-living crisis, Stagecoach’s partnership with the University, launched in November 2022, is part of the University’s sustainability strategy with the goal of becoming ‘net zero’ by 2035.

The University of St Andrews recently appointed Julie Ellen as the new director of the Byre Theatre. Ellen previously served as the Artistic Director and CEO of Macrobert Arts Centre, Stirling, taking up the post in 2015.
Eeyore: the Undeniable Highlight of On The Rocks Festival
Alix Ramillion reviews the popular independent theatre production. On 24 and 27 March, Eeyore, an independent student-led production, was performed at the Buchanan Lecture Theatre. The subtitle - ‘a saddish play’ - gave us a taster of its subject matter. Through eight witty vignettes, the performance satirised different aspects of depression.
