Allen was a veteran of the Korean War. He served with the U.S. Army for two and a half years, having been honorably discharged in 1954. He was a member of the American Legion Carl Neff Post 571. He had worked for the state highway, out of Franklin, for eight years. He then went to work for Sylvania, near Pleasantville, for three years. Allen then moved to Erie to work for General Electric for more than 25 years until his retirement in 1992.
