Don’t Call Me a Breast Cancer ‘Survivor’
4 min read Six years ago, I unexpectedly spent 467 days actively fighting for my life. From the moment I first learned that I had breast cancer to the morning of my last infusion, I thought of little else than earning the title of survivor. I imagined what it would feel like to wake in the morning to anything other than an immediate accounting of my aches and pains. I envisioned a calendar free of medical appointments and a bathroom drawer absent of pillboxes.
This is why women are scared to tell their doctors the truth
Approximately five hours into my first chemotherapy infusion, the muscles in my back began to spasm. A little at first, but then quickly the spasms grew stronger and stronger, until it felt as if the muscles were being ripped from my bones. Newly diagnosed with breast cancer, I had been medicated with steroids for a long and taxing treatment, but even so, my body had a rare reaction. My face turned a deep red. My blood pressure spiked. I couldn’t speak, couldn’t see, couldn’t breathe.

There’s one lie I will never tell my children
Some lies we tell as parents, however well-intentioned, can do more harm than good, says the writer. PHOTO ILLUSTRATION: PEXELS Parents who claim to never lie to their children are liars. It begins with Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. Then it’s yes, all kindergartners go to bed at seven o’clock and no, the chickens on the farm and the chicken on your plate are not the same kind of chicken. Most of these untruths are harmless – white lies, we call them.
