Although OA is primarily a degenerative disease, many other pathophysiological features can contribute to the global symptoms of the disease. Acute inflammatory flares, for example, are associated with burning and aching sensations while chronic neuropathic symptoms tend to be stabbing and like electric shocks. We hypothesize that the acute inflammatory episodes found in OA drive peripheral neuropathy leading to a complex pain syndrome.
