Capital Stage presents new play festival
SACRAMENTO — As a part of its mission to develop new plays and playwrights, Capital Stage will present its 12th annual New Play Festival, Playwrights’ Revolution. Beginning in January of this year, Capital Stage sought out new play submissions. Within two weeks the maximum of 350 new play submissions were received. During the following months a team of readers, led by Resident Dramaturg K. Kevyne Baar, read and processed those submissions.
The art of shaking off the cobwebs Or: how The Weekly led me back to where I belong
In my senior bio for my high school musical, I stated proudly that I was going to Muhlenberg College to double major in theatre and media & communication. Though I did go to the college, I did not major in either of those things. Instead, I am about to graduate with an English major and minors in creative writing and French. And I think, in part, The Weekly might be to blame. Or to thank. Maybe.
Resident advisors struggle to feel at home
Various Muhlenberg resident advisors. The RAs in this photo are not affiliated with this article. As a first year at Muhlenberg, your resident advisor is likely one of the first people that you meet on campus. Hall meetings are often one of the initial things that occur after the families leave on move-in day.

On Mar. 3, members of the Muhlenberg community received an email from the College with the subject line “COVID-19 Masking Policy Update.” This message announced the change to a flexible masking policy to be instituted beginning on Mar. 7. This came a mere three days after the official implementation of the Yellow Phase. Originally, the Yellow Phase was announced on Feb.
Muhlenberg reflects on body positivity
Members of Body Positive and Mental Health Peer Advocates tabling at Seegers Union on Feb. 23. “At Body Positive, we say that a body is like a lamp,” Renee Levine ‘22, co-president of Body Positive, recited during the “More than a Mirror” event on Feb. 23. This unique philosophy has a simple conclusion: “When you walk into a room and see a lamp, you just think: it’s a lamp. It’s neutral.
enACT regrows its roots
Students browse their options at enACT's recent clothing swap. On Jan. 23, Seegers Union was abuzz with a new event: a sustainable clothing swap. Students gathered around tables where clothes were laid out for them to take and trade for old clothing items of their own. That way, students and staff could spruce up their closet for the spring while also refraining from creating clothing waste.
A unique collection mule-tiplies
Karen Normann poses with a portion of her mule collection. Photo by Ally Duvak '22. In the basement of Seegers Union, between the textbooks and sweatshirts sold in the ‘Berg Bookshop, lives a unique collection. Karen Normann has worked in the bookshop for 33 years and has spent much of that time becoming an aficionado in gathering some very Muhlenberg-appropriate keepsakes: mules. “There are probably between 60 or 70,” Normann reported proudly when she sat down to talk with The Weekly.
SGA reflects on the fall semester
The SGA is holding elections to fill some spots for next semester. Photo courtesy of Ben Eber '23. As the semester draws to a close, The Weekly checked in with the Student Government Association (SGA) to hear their reflections on the past few months and what they are looking forward to in the future. SGA President Zaire Carter ‘22 stated, “I believe that the visibility of SGA has increased and students know more about who we are. That is such a major accomplishment for SGA.

Muhlenberg’s “From the Ashes of Relentless Racial Crises: Creating a New United States of America”speaker series welcomed a new guest on Oct. 28. Rebecca Walker is a writer, feminist and activist as well as a consultant for several Fortune 500 companies.
Tree house of Horror
It may just seem like a ripoff of a “The Simpsons”episode title, but it’s true: Muhlenberg’s infamous “tree house” is haunted. I would know – I live there! Over the past two months since we moved in, my roommates and I have observed an increasing level of activity that we’ve only been able to describe as paranormal. Phantom sights and sounds, items that move on their own and the ghost’s most standard move: flickering lights on and off.
College hosts first Campus Safety Community Night
On Wednesday, Oct. 13, lights and music filled the College Green as the first ever Campus Safety Community Night began. Various emergency service vehicles lined the pathway between Seegers Union and the Baker Center for the Arts, drawing eyes. What looked like it might have been an emergency response at first glance turned out to be the opposite as festivities filled the lawn beside Victor’s Lament.
Car crashes into Benfer Hall
Repairs begin on Benfer Hall in the wake of Sunday's accident. Photo by Ally Duvak '22. In the earliest hours of the morning on Sunday Oct. 3, residents of Benfer Hall were greeted with a loud noise. Whether they were woken from sleep or up late socializing, various residents reported being shocked by the volume of the sound. “I heard a loud bang that resembled the sound of a car hitting another car,” reported Zach Merlino ‘24. But the damage was greater than a simple fender bender.
What to expect from Senior Days and Commencement Weekend
Photo courtesy of @muhlenbergcollege on Instagram. On April 27, the College announced the order of events for Senior Days, which begin on May 21. Though the festivities kick off in an unusual way, with mandatory COVID-19 testing, it’s clear: Muhlenberg is putting safety first in preparation to celebrate the class of 2021.
What’s new with Workday Student
In a year chock full of change for the Muhlenberg community, another alteration rolled around last month: the implementation of Workday Student, a new registration process. Registration for the Fall 2021 semester will not take place on Capstone as so many students are used to; instead, Workday Student will be the new face of Muhlenberg course selection. The Workday Student project began in 2017, according to Director of Client Support Services Phedra Henninger.
Student struggles and successes this semester
Photo by Ayden Levine '23 “Burnt out, overwhelmed, scatter-brained, exhausted…” These are perhaps typical descriptors for students who just surpassed the midterm mark of the semester. But according to what various students report to The Weekly, the feeling has multiplied tenfold during this unprecedented semester — especially for students at home.
Flight risk: how ‘Berg is studying abroad
Photo by Ayden Levine '23 It was business as usual during the Common Hour meeting for study abroad programs on Friday, Oct. 16. The meeting, geared primarily toward students in the Class of 2023, promised information about the benefits of studying abroad, the application process, and a time for Q/A. Save for the new Zoom venue, the beginning of the meeting felt completely standard.
