Ally Adnan’s Biography

Ally Adnan is an enthusiastic and indefatigable patron of cultural heritage, and a well-known writer and speaker on culture, history, and creative expression. He holds a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and has led business units at several multinational telecommunications, cybersecurity, and consulting firms. His true love, however, is the arts.

Ally’s work is driven by a belief that knowledge of culture, history, and the arts should be accessible to everyone. He is highly committed to making esoteric subjects accessible, comprehensible, and relatable. Gifted with a rare ability to distill complex ideas into clear and engaging narratives, he makes the intricate traditions of South Asian culture intelligible to a wide variety of audiences.

Ally is a connoisseur and archivist of art, antiquities, and music. He owns more than six thousand paintings, including original works by Abdul Rehman Chughtai, Ahmed Parvez, Ali Imam, Allah Bux, Bashir Mirza, Anwar Jalal Shemza, Gulgee, Jamil Naqsh, Joan Miró, M. F. Husain, Marino Marini, Pablo Picasso, Sadequain, Sayed Haider Raza, and many others. His collection of music comprises eighty thousand hours of unpublished live recordings from South Asia. He has donated a portion of the material to the National College of Arts in Lahore, Pakistan, where the archive bears his name. His diverse collection of art includes antique Japanese cloisonné, English sterling silver, Persian and Afghan rugs, Russian icons, Chinese snuff bottles, Mughal jewelry, Muslim prayer beads, and Tibetan thangkas.

Ally began writing at the age of eleven and is one of the few Pakistani writers to have consistently written about music and the performing arts for more than four decades. His work has appeared in Dawn, The Express Tribune, The Friday Times, Good Times, The Herald, Lajja, Minute Mirror, The Nation, Newsline, Page 3, The Pakistan Observer, She, Upstreet, V Mag, and a number of international publications. His writings on classical music constitute a significant and valuable treatise on the culture, theory, and practice of music in India and Pakistan. He is an accredited member of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) and the Dallas–Fort Worth Film Critics Association. Ally speaks regularly on culture and the arts on radio and television, in schools, and at research symposia all over the world.

Ally has presented at several prestigious educational institutions, including Aga Khan University in Karachi, New York University (NYU), the National College of the Arts in Lahore, the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London, the University of North Texas, and the University of Texas at Dallas. He has led symposia, talks, and seminars for renowned organizations such as the All Pakistan Music Conference, Alliance Française, Ain Adab, Asia Society, Asian Study Group, Faiz Ghar, Islamabad Club, Kuch Khaas, Olomopolo, Sanjan Nagar Institute, Szabist, T2F, and many others, and conducted sessions at notable literary events like the Faiz Mela and the Karachi Literature Festival.

Ally’s primary area of expertise is Qawwali and Sufism. He has conducted extensive research and is recognized as a subject-matter expert in the two areas. He regularly organizes performances of Qawwali and conducts lectures, talks, and discussions on Qawwali and Sufism all over the world.

Ally serves on the boards of several cultural institutions and founded After Hours, an organization that supports South Asian art in the United States. He is a visiting professor in the Department of Musicology at Punjab University in Lahore, Pakistan.
