Expedition 368X methods supplement
An acoustic positioning beacon was not deployed during International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 368X, but one was prepared for immediate deployment if required. During Expedition 368X, a 5 cm whole-round sample for paleontological (PAL) analysis was collected from the core catcher of most sediment cores by the IODP JOIDES Resolution Science Operator (JRSO) technical staff. The sample was vacuum sealed and placed in cold storage for postcruise analysis.
Expedition 368X summary
International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 368X is the third of three expeditions that form the South China Sea Rifted Margin program. Expeditions 367, 368, and 368X share the common key objectives of testing scientific hypotheses of breakup of the northern South China Sea (SCS) margin and comparing its rifting style and history to other nonvolcanic or magma-poor rifted margins.
Site U1500
International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 367 Site U1500 is located on basement Ridge B and is the most seaward site that Expedition 367 drilled within the South China Sea (SCS) continent–ocean transition (COT) zone. Ridge B is located ~80 km seaward of the outer margin high and ~20 km seaward of Ridge A, where Site U1499 was drilled.
Site U1503
International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Site U1503 (proposed Site SCSII-9B; Sun at al., 2016) is located at 3868 meters below sea level (mbsl) near the top of the structural high named Ridge C (Figures F1, F2). Ridge C is the most seaward ridge of the three margin-parallel Ridges A, B, and C that characterize the lower continental slope underlain by thin (5–7 km) crust.
Site U1502
Site U1502 (proposed Site SCSII-17A; Sun et al., 2016) within the South China Sea (SCS) northern margin (Figures F1, F2) is located at 3764 meters below sea level (mbsl) on a prominent basement ridge (A) within the continent–ocean transition (COT) (Figure F3). Ridge A is one of four distinct basement highs found across the COT. The outer margin high (OMH) is the most landward of these highs and is followed seaward by the nearly parallel Ridges A, B, and C.
Site U1501
Site U1501 (proposed Site SCSII-41A; 18°53.0923′N, 115°45.9455′E) (Sun et al., 2016) within the South China Sea (SCS) northern margin (Figure F1) is located on a broad regional basement high (outer margin high [OMH]). The OMH is the most landward of four distinct highs within the continent–ocean transition (COT) and is followed seaward by Ridges A, B, and C (Figures F2, F3, F4). Site U1501 is located at 2845.8 m below sea level (mbsl).
Site U1504
Site U1504 (alternate Site SCSII-27A) was proposed during International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 367 and approved by the Environmental Protection and Safety Panel during Expedition 368 as an alternate site should there be time left following completion of the high-priority sites included in the Scientific Prospectus (Sun et al., 2016). Expedition 368 occupied Site U1504 because of the inability to continue drilling below the 990 m deep, cased Hole U1503A.
Expedition 367/368 methods
This introduction provides an overview of operations, depth conventions, core handling, curatorial procedures, and analyses performed on the R/V JOIDES Resolution during International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expeditions 367 and 368. These two expeditions were implemented as a single science program; the methods used were intended to be the same for both expeditions. Any differences are clearly noted in this chapter.
Expedition 367/368 summary
The primary objectives of International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 367/368 to the northern South China Sea (SCS) margin were to (1) examine its history of continental breakup and (2) compare it with other nonvolcanic or magma-poor rifted margins with the broader goal of testing models for continental breakup. A secondary objective was to further our understanding of the paleoceanographic and environmental development of the SCS and southeast Asia during the Cenozoic.
Site U1499
International Ocean Discovery (IODP) Expedition 367 Site U1499 (proposed Site SCSII-14A; Sun et al., 2016) is located on basement Ridge A within the South China Sea (SCS) continent–ocean transition (COT) zone ~60 km seaward and southeast of the outer margin high.

Site U1505
Site U1505 (proposed Site SCSII-3D; Sun et al., 2016) is located at 2916.6 m water depth on a broad regional basement high (Figure F1). This site was an alternate to Site U1501, should time be left for drilling following completion of the high-priority sites included in the Scientific Prospectus (Sun et al., 2016).
IODP Expedition 320T Discrete analyzer
Dissolved components such as silica, phosphate, ammonium, etc. measured in pore water or rhizon samples using a discrete analyzer spectrophotometer unit.
IODP Expedition 320T Gas safety report
This composite report returns data from two different gas chromatograph configurations (GC3 and NGA). Each row combines data from several measurements made on the same sample at the same time for a particular headspace or vacutainer sample. If data do not exist for a particular expedition, the column does not appear. Gas samples were measured by gas chromatography and either flame ionization detection (GC-FID) or thermal conductivity detection (GC-TCD).
IODP Expedition 320T Formation temperature
Description Formation temperature was measured by the advanced piston corer temperature tool (APCT-3), Sediment Temperature Tool (SET), or sediment temperature pressure tool (SETP) and reduced to in situ temperature and (for SETP) pressure estimates. These data are compiled per instrument run and assigned to a core (the core cut with the APCT-3 cutting shoe or the core following the SET deployment).
IODP Expedition 320T Vane shear strength (AVS)
Shear strength was measured on section halves using a GEISA automated vane shear (AVS) frame and device controller. The device is suitable for sediment not affected by cementation (i.e., saturated, clay-rich, soft sediment). Shear strength measurements should be considered only approximate, particularly because the influence of pore pressure changes during the undrained experiment cannot be estimated.
IODP Expedition 320T Bulk Density (GRA)
Gamma ray attenuation (GRA) data were acquired using a Cs-137 collimated source and a sodium iodide (thallium), or NaI(Tl), scintillation detector. The signal was calibrated using water and aluminum standards to provide a proxy for bulk density. This measurement was performed by a sensor mounted on either the Whole-Round Multisensor Logger (WRMSL) or the Special Task Multisensor Logger (STMSL); which track was used for a given data set is indicated in the data.
IODP Expedition 320T Inorganic carbon (coulometer)
Inorganic carbon (carbonate) is determined by coulometry, which uses a photodetection cell to measure carbon dioxide evolved during sample acidification. Report includes percent inorganic carbon and calcium carbonate.
