Chicken lockdown
News from the farm | Animal welfare Duncan Janaway 11th February 2021 Organic farms are the best place to be when there’s a Housing Order (lockdown) due to an outbreak of avian flu, because the flock density (number of birds permitted per square metre of space) is so much lower than other systems. The birds have loads of room in the sheds, so they’re not on top of each other, and really they’re in the best place possible.
21 tonnes of plastic saved
News from the farm | Plastic | Packaging Guy Singh-Watson 4th February 2021 The transition is complete, and our fruit and veg packaging (bags, punnets, nets) is now home compostable, where packaging is needed at all. Brexit, bees and book recommendations
News from the farm Guy Singh-Watson 28th January 2021 So far, our trucks are getting across the Channel (albeit with a lot of additional paperwork); unlike friends in fisheries, our produce has not yet rotted in a lorry. I am relieved that my predictions of total post-Brexit chaos have not materialised. An upside to Brexit could be better farming, food and environmental policy, but early signs are not encouraging.
A marmalade time of year
News from the farm | Farming Amadora Gahona 20th January 2021 These are busy days, and smell of orange and marmalade. Crews come from the countryside bringing the best fruit, and many women are preparing the boxes full of our Gospa Citrus organic Seville oranges. These boxes are a gift of taste and love of our land for all the British people who appreciate them so much.
