Why the Nine-Fairfax merger could be bad for business
You might think business is rubbing its hands with glee over the Fairfax/Nine proposed merger. However if it plays out the way many Fairfax journalists fear it will, there will be fewer journalists engaged in high quality journalism. But hey, that’s good new for business, right? Less scrutiny, fewer pesky journalists digging around their company, exposing the dirty linen. It’s not so. For many businesses, a high quality business press is very important.
Blockchain: the truth machine
Amanda Gome: Five years ago, you began talking about the erosion of trust in institutions. Rachel Botsman: Yes. For a long time, people stopped needing to trust each other because trust flowed through institutions. But two things happened: technology and social media forced institutions to be more transparent, revealing problems and flaws. And at the same time the trust that exists between individuals can be scaled globally.
Leaders should be encouraging staff to use social media at work
It was months in the planning. The firm’s big annual conference was coming up. The social media manager would be live tweeting from the company’s Twitter handles and turning the content into LinkedIn and Facebook posts to leverage attendees’ communities and garner media attention. But nothing worked as planned. The pregnant social media manager went into early labour. And the company’s guidelines firmly state that only the social media manager could do social media on behalf of the company.
The reality of the role of women in business | ANZ BlueNotes
Do we need more women in business? Clearly, yes. The evidence shows a more balanced gender and diversity mix better represents communities and consumers and helps not just business outcomes but governance. But there is a deeper issue. Even where the mix is very healthy – and if I look at the small- and medium-enterprise market we have a very healthy gender mix – the perception remains that business is run by men.
Here’s why banks can be disruptors | ANZ BlueNotes
Disruption is the buzzword of today and this is nowhere more prevalent than in banking. But there can be a misconception in the fintech community that disruption is just about technology, platforms, gizmos or revolutionary start-ups. For me working at ANZ, disruption is about reimagining what companies already do today. It's about making an experience significantly easier or fixing a problem.

Adspend turns social in record quarter for Australia | ANZ BlueNotes
The upheaval in the media landscape has powered tidal growth in search and social media advertising spend which is showing no sign of abating. TV spending, meanwhile, remains strong in the face of new rivals like content streaming service Netflix. The Melbourne Spends and Trends conference, hosted by Standard Media Index (SMI) and Mumbrella with the support of ANZ BlueNotes, heard of a bullish start to the year for advertising, kept somewhat in check by mixed views on the outlook.
Ten ways to keep your New Year leadership resolution | ANZ BlueNotes
New Year's resolutions might seem a harmless custom – vows to join a gym or learn to do the tango - you know in your heart of hearts will never make it off the to-do list. But why waste the opportunity to make substantive changes? Let's face it; the novel is not going to happen, which is probably for the best. But that's not to say you shouldn't be thinking about making changes that will make a real difference to you and those around you.
Women: change or miss the top jobs
Without visibility and communication skills women, unless taken under the wing of a top male powerbroker, have almost no chance of progressing to the top levels of business. That's a harsh but unfortunately accurate assessment of today's corporate world. But once taught to be visible, female executives can find the benefits unexpectedly widespread including gaining sales, boosting their performance, fuelling ambition and receiving promotions.
Forget quotas, diversity campaigns are better for women on boards
Global diversity campaign 30% Club is launching in Australia, hoping to lead the nation's most influential company directors in a push to see women make up 30 per cent of ASX 200 boards by 2018. Well-known Australian director and Country Lead for 30% Club Australia Patricia Cross is at the forefront.
Social customers will transform banking | ANZ BlueNotes
Across the financial services industry there is still scepticism around the value of social media. “Isn't it personal?" some ask. “What's the value to a bank of embracing social media? And are our customers really even on it?" But KPMG's new Banking on the Future report should extinguish a lot of that doubt. It investigates the mindset and expectations of professional, educated 18-to-30-year olds and its findings could apply to businesses in any industry.
