A synaptic locus of song learning
Abstract Learning by imitation is the foundation for verbal and musical expression, but its neural basis remains unclear. A juvenile male zebra finch imitates the multisyllabic song of an adult tutor in a process that depends on a song-specialized cortico-basal ganglia circuit1,2,3,4, affording a powerful system to identify the synaptic substrates of imitative motor learning.
A practical roadmap: Conducting personal information protection compliance audits under China's PIPL
China's Personal Information Protection Law has long required organizations to periodically audit personal information processing for legal compliance. What is evolving most quickly is not the existence of duty, but what regulators and stakeholders increasingly expect the audit to look like in practice: regularity, a credible methodology and, above all, verifiability. Put simply, it is no longer enough to say you have policies and controls.

Responsible AI use in project finance
Artificial intelligence is reshaping work by delivering speed, efficiency and instant insights across industries. However, the risks of AI misuse are uniquely high for infrastructure investment teams, where a single hallucinated contract term or miscalculated financial ratio can put millions of dollars at risk. This danger has led many such firms to ban AI entirely, while others experiment in an ad hoc manner that could create substantial professional liability.

12 Winter PNW Vegetables to Try and Why They’re So Healthy
Winter doesn’t scream “fresh produce,” but there are actually a surprising number of veggie options grown right here in Washington state. You should be able to find them on your grocery store shelves or at your local farmers market, hopefully inspiring your next meal. “Winter feels like the perfect time to slow down in the kitchen, try new recipes and let something simmer away on the stove,” says Amanda Li, a registered dietitian nutritionist at UW Medical Center – Montlake.

Extreme Heat is a Public Health Emergency All Year Round
Each summer, headlines across the country highlight record-breaking temperatures, unexpected heat waves, and tips for staying safe during extreme heat. But as climate change worsens, extreme heat is no longer just a summer issue. Heat events are starting earlier, lasting longer, and becoming more intense — posing increasingly dire health risks to people in communities nationwide. In light of this, we need a greater public health response.
Infectious Complications During Reinduction in Children with Relapsed Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia: A Descriptive Analysis
Abstract Children with relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) face higher rates of infection and treatment-related mortality than at initial diagnosis. Although immunotherapy is increasingly used in the relapsed setting, combination intensive chemotherapy remains the standard approach for reinduction. Serious infections during this phase can delay or preclude curative therapy. We aimed to describe the incidence and pattern of infections during reinduction in this high-risk population.

My friends and I ranked (almost) every college formal
After three years, I've realised that I am nowhere close to completing the Oxford formal challenge. But luckily, my friends and I collectively only lack five colleges, all of which are postgrad, and one of which is All Souls. Here is our ranking - we only include normal formals to even out intra-formal disparities. For the formals I haven't been to, Max and Juliette have compared them to colleges where we overlap. Our ranking criteria are: 1) food quality, 2) ambience including themes, 3) price.
From Climate Anxiety to Climate Resilience: A Path Forward for Children and Youth
As climate change impacts accelerate, so do their effects on the well-being of our communities, especially children and youth. According to ecoAmerica’s latest poll, 72% of Americans recognize that young people and future generations experience disproportionate harms from climate change. These impacts are not only physical or environmental — they’re emotional and psychological, too.

25 Seasonal PNW Fruits and Veggies You Should Try This Spring
Spring is in the air. Here in the Pacific Northwest, that means April (and May and June) showers, an explosion of tulips and the dreaded Juneuary. But even our gloomy weather can’t stop spring from springing in one of its most celebrated ways: growing some delicious seasonal produce. Whether you want tips for including more veggies into your daily meals, recipes to mix up your meal prep, or just a guide to which locally grown produce is in season, we’ve got you covered.
An evening at Pierre Victoire: French bistro dining at its best
Pierre Victoire has been here on Little Clarendon Street for decades – one of our porters even worked there before coming to college. So I was personally delighted to have the chance to try their menu for a second time, after the arrival of Chris Prow, who had 2 AA Rosettes at his last restaurant in London. Phoebe, the Lifestyle Dep Ed, arrived with me that evening to a slightly packed bistro and an immediately homely atmosphere.
How Oxford celebrates Pancake Day, from races to formals
Today is Shrove Tuesday, the last day before Lent, and coincidentally, pancake day! Oxford does a lot to celebrate, and Cherwell is excited to give a rundown of all the pancake-related shenanigans that are going on today. Worcester, Christ Church, and Oriel college are each doing their annual pancake day race, running around their quads. At Oriel, for instance, runners dress in sub fusc and substitute frying pans for battons, flipping a pancake as they pass each corner of their front quad.
Why We Should Seek Rejections
Amanda Li · Follow 3 min read · -- Have you ever wanted to do something important, but instead, you found yourself busy with everything except that one thing? Answering emails, checking off smaller tasks — convincing yourself you’re being productive — when in reality, you’re just avoiding the thing that truly matters? That was me. I wanted to reach out to a leader I deeply admired, but instead of sending a simple invite for coffee, I kept finding “more urgent” things to do. Weeks passed. Then months.
The definitive ranking of (most) Oxford matcha
Matcha, rich in antioxidants and caffeinated, is my go-to when I don’t want anything espresso. Yet, not every store in Oxford sells it, and I have been a victim of many bad matcha lattes over the years. Here’s a ranking of the matcha lattes I’ve had in Oxford — not including bobas or Black Sheep blueberry matchas, though many places do matcha boba quite well. For this ranking, I rated lattes made with the cafe’s standard milk, which for the most part was whole milk. 10.
Three Thousand reasons to slurp
Everyone is talking about Three Thousand, the newest restaurant in Oxford serving Lanzhou style ramen and hotpot. Across from the Union on St. Michael’s Street, Three Thousand sits on the site of the old Nosebag restaurant and is always incredibly busy. It sells different forms of ramen and noodles, with hot pot customers relegated to the upstairs seating. I decided to stop by with Grace, my editor from last term, to see what the hype was about.

The Breakfast Club: Bringing the mid to midday
Brunch is a particular love of mine. Between the poached eggs at Brasenose brunch, the coconut pancakes at The Handle Bar Cafe, and huevos rancheros at the Oxford Brunch Bar, there is no shortage of weekend brunch options in Oxford. So when my boyfriend and I decided to have a quick brunch date at the Westgate, we decided to try The Breakfast Club. The place is a UK-wide chain, based on American breakfast and brunch food.

Born and raised in the Bay Area, I have lived in Seattle for four years and have now truly embraced the beauty of Washington, despite the dark and rainy winters. Dishoom's Permit Room brings the spirit of Bombay to Oxford
Cherwell Food attended the opening of Dishoom’s first restaurant in Oxford: a Permit Room based on those in Bombay restaurants where it is legal to serve alcohol. An all-day cafe, they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner: with plenty of unique cocktails at the bar. Dishoom already has two of these scattered across the UK, including in Cambridge(hosting a Permit Room is the only respect Oxford has been second to Cambridge in).
Is Protein Coffee Good For You?
TikTok has launched several coffee trends, from delicious (but time-consuming) whipped coffee recipes, to a Whole Foods brown butter cookie latte dupe. One of the most enduring trends on the coffee front, however, is also said to be a nutrition hack. Enter TikTok’s viral “proffee” – aka protein coffee. While the concept of adding some extra protein to your morning cup of joe isn’t entirely groundbreaking, the proffee method is definitely a bit unconventional.
Oxford kebab vans: For the uninitiated
Oxford students have loyalty to two things: their college and their kebab van. There are quite a few scattered around the city, appearing from around 7pm until 3 or 4am. Before you pick which one you will exclusively eat from for the next three years, here’s a guide to who serves what, where.

GGRF will require lots of reporting. Tech, clarity, and collaboration can help
The $27-billion Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund rolling out this summer promises to deliver sustainable infrastructure to communities across America. Green banks, community development financial institutions (CDFIs), and other community lenders will transform these federal dollars into meaningful projects empowering underserved communities — think more clean, affordable energy, lower heating and cooling bills, electric vehicle charging, and more.
The definitive Oxford smoothie review
With summer comes smoothie weather, and Oxford offers a plethora of fruity delights. Coming from a place where a small smoothie is twice the price of the most expensive one here, being able to get something cold and fruity from a cafe on a hot day makes even the worst day of exam revision better. Take this article as an ode to the refreshing smoothie, and some of my favourite places to get them.
Sushi Bowl: A sensational start
There is a new sushi restaurant in town! More than just another Wasabi and Itsu, Sushi Bowl in the Covered Market is a well-located new spot for a roll or poke bowl on the go. On the corner of the Covered Market, next to the fruit stand and Sartorelli’s, the restaurant opened fairly recently yet has already been getting busier and busier. I stopped by on a Saturday afternoon in search of a little treat to celebrate finishing my collections.
A guide to Gloucester Green
No city is complete without a fresh food market. Oxford’s is the area next to Gloucester Green bus station, hosting the Gloucester Green Market Wednesdays through Saturdays. Students flock to it during the day for a fun outing, food, and a browse through the vintage clothing stalls or jewellery booths. Gloucester Green’s food stalls offer cuisines from all over the world. You’ll be sure to see something new every week, all selling a good meal for less than £10.
Uncorny traditionalism at Il Corno
Il Corno stands out from the average sit-in Covered Market restaurant. Its crimson walls contrast from the beiges and blues of the surrounding stalls and walls, with an inviting and intimate yet intimidating atmosphere that made me feel like I was no longer in a market. The walls were covered with various statues of cornicellos – twisted chilis that look like horns and are central to Neapolitan culture – that the restaurant took its name from.
A New Yorker Reviews Oxford Shake Shack
Shake Shack is more than a fast food restaurant to me. I’d go there on half days with friends or eat and talk for hours with my teammates after our last practice of the year. My parents would always take me out for burgers there when we went out to the Museum of Natural History. So when the chain opened a new location on Cornmarket Street last month, I was relieved to be able to cure my homesickness with a late-night black-and-white milkshake.
Theo’s Café - Cherwell
Theo’s is the new hotspot on Broad Street. Its clean white-and-beige interior with cushion-lined seats provide an aesthetic place to work, eat, and sip. One of the owners, Rudy Qaqu, also runs the restaurant Acropolis in Headington. It’s easily Oxford-centric. The coffee beans are sourced locally, and many of the other baked goods are baked fresh, with a cake of the day and classic Mediterranean desserts like baklava. Even the booths were Oxford themed — mine had a sketch of familiar Broad Street.

Mental Health Walk Michaelmas: Covered Market, Westgate, the Streets – The Oxford Student
Originally, I was going to go to the Ashmolean this week with my friend. Instead, I got that feeling you get when you’re absolutely bleh (still do!) and decided to instead take a little walk around before seeing my friends for dinner. Saturday scaries, am I right? So off I went, getting a nice little drink as a treat and walking around town to try to relax.

Behind the BNOC: Babbling with Becky – The Oxford Student
For my last column interview, it was a lovely sunny day right before our JCR guest night formal, and I had sat on my blanket for the past three hours trying to finish an essay before remembering I had an interview. Luckily, my interviewee, Becky, was not only a sunshiney personality, but equally as in love with the sun, so we sat down on BNC New Quad to have a chat surrounded by the sounds of croquet and parents.
Behind the BNOC: Heart-to-Hearts with Hamish – The Oxford Student
This week, we decided to delve into the realm of postgrads, who seem quite elusive to me: they’re less plugged into social life compared to undergrads and forced to be quite independent learners. So it was to my surprise that Hamish Nash, famed tagger on Oxfess, was in fact in his penultimate year of not only a Masters degree, but of a PhD.
Behind the BNOC: Activities with Amy – The Oxford Student
Amy Ellis Winterâs reputation precedes her in many ways. Her relatively large social profile comes from her participation in many Oxford societies, such as Editor in Chief of That Oxford Girl, mentor for Zero Gravity, Director of Communications at the Oxford Union, and work in the Oxford fashion scene and journalism with The Oxford Blue and the Serenity Project.
Behind the BNOC: Dallying with Dipper – The Oxford Student
Hello dear friends, and welcome to another term! I decided to take a deep dive into people known around the Oxford communityâwhether for their advocacy, positivity, or large social media presence. So of course my first stop had to be the one and only DJ Dipper, Daniel the History and Politics finalist at Magdalen.
Protein-Based Model for Energy Transfer between Photosynthetic Light-Harvesting Complexes Is Constructed Using a Direct Protein-Protein Conjugation Strategy | Journal of the American Chemical Society
Photosynthetic organisms utilize dynamic and complex networks of pigments bound within light-harvesting complexes to transfer solar energy from antenna complexes to reaction centers. Understanding the principles underlying the efficiency of these energy transfer processes, and how they may be incorporated into artificial light-harvesting systems, is facilitated by the construction of easily tunable model systems.
Behind the Busker: Covers from the Heart with Caleb and Hari
This week has proven a bit unsuccessful in terms of finding fixtures of Oxford buskers to interview. After being rebuffed by the violin lady, turned down by the guy playing the guitar on Cornmarket, and coming home an hour after a wild goose chase for the guy playing the big machine with the handle that turns, I decided to speak to some of the newer buskers in the area just to see how their perspective shifted from those who’ve been doing it for forever.
