Architects Francisco J. Rencoret and Gonzalo Domínguez Design a Boutique Hotel in Chile | Architectural Digest
This article originally appeared in the January 2009 issue of Architectural Digest. At first glance, Chile's Atacama Desert seems like the most inhospitable place on earth—a virtually rainless plateau located between the Andes and the Pacific, dotted with salt pools, geysers and lava flows. Its terrain is more lunar than terrestrial; indeed, Mars probes are tested there, and it has served as a location for films like Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets .
Wang Ta-Chun Brings Modernism to a Villa in China | Architectural Digest
This article originally appeared in the August 2008 issue of Architectural Digest. China is one of the world's oldest continuous civilizations, with a history dating back 5,000 years; but to visit the country today is to feel an adrenaline jolt of modernity. In cities like Beijing and Shanghai, old neighborhoods are being razed to make way for high-rises; in rural areas, highways and high-speed trains are opening up the interior and golf courses are replacing rice paddies.
A Light-Filled Beach House on Long Island’s East End Becomes a Serene Retreat | Architectural Digest
This article originally appeared in the April 2009 issue of Architectural Digest. A Historic Chicago Residence Becomes a Contemporary Home for a Young Family | Architectural Digest

A Luxurious Zimbabwe Residence | Architectural Digest
This article originally appeared in the December 2010 issue of Architectural Digest. Sorry we got cut off,” says Patrick Mavros on the telephone. “It's the baboons' fault. They roost up on the telephone poles, and sometimes they jump around and interrupt the signal.” As excuses go, this is certainly a novel one; but in the world according to Mavros, it's completely natural.
Iris Apfel’s Manhattan Apartment
Iris Barrel Apfel—fashion muse, decorator, and cofounder of Old World Weavers—wearing Chado Ralph Rucci and jewelry of her own design in the New York City apartment she shares with her husband, Carl. The living room’s bleached-oak boiserie is 18th-century French, and the door hardware is by P. E. Guerin; the screen is also French, while the chair at left, covered in an Old World Weavers tapestry fabric, is 17th-century Sicilian.
The Borderline Mother in Netflix's Stranger Things - Women Write About Comics
The Duffer Brothers’ Stranger Things intrigued me with the fantastically ’80s splash screen on the Netflix series page and totally hooked me with the title sequence. And then my wife and I watched the entire, too-short eight-episode series in, oh, a weekend. I reveled in the plethora of cinematic and musical nods to the decade of my youth, in the gripping suspense, and in the (largely) three-dimensional characters. I was horrifyingly entranced by the fantastic monster design.
