What Is a Fun Palace?
by Amie Taylor | This piece publishes alongside the Zócalo/Los Angeles Times program “Would Parliamentary America Have More Fun?,” tomorrow, Friday, February 23, at 7 PM PST. Register here to attend in person or online. For one weekend in 2014, my local community and I came together and took over Brockwell Lido, an outdoor swimming pool in South London. We put on an entirely free weekend of arts, culture, and science events for our community.

As people all over the country are gearing up for the Fun Palaces Weekend 2018, I’m hugely excited to be joining in this year, hosting the first official, LGBTQ+ Fun Palace at The Pleasance Theatre in North London. The Fun Palace concept is an annual weekend of community-led activity taking place all over the UK and beyond, co-founded by Stella Duffy, it’s in it’s fifth year and is happening nationwide (and beyond) on the 6 and 7 October 2018.

Chuffed to Bits: The Best British Christmas Movie? – A Love Letter to “Love Actually”
*Warning* If you haven’t seen the film Love Actually, I don’t recommend reading the following, as it’s full of spoilers.  And while we’re on the subject, why haven’t you seen it yet? It was released in 2003! Please go watch it. Posthaste.
Chuffed to Bits: Top British Christmas Songs To Bring You Some Christmas Cheer - Which is Your Favorite?
It’s that time of year once again, ladies and gents. The time of year where I go into my iTunes Library, click the little checkbox next to all of my favourite Christmas songs, and sync them to my iPod. And in looking through that list, I’ve assembled quite a vast and varied selection of tunes over the years. There are the songs I listened to as a kid that were part of my parents’ collection (Nat, Ella, Frank, and Bing, anyone?), and the more modern stuff I enjoy as well.
Raising our voices
I can pinpoint the exact moment I snapped. It was during an LGBT Festival last year and the drag artist that was compèring made a derogatory and misogynistic aside about lesbians. I continued to simmer as he went on to read a poem that had decidedly ableist undertones. I left the theatre feeling angry and questioning, “Who is this LGBT festival for?” Certainly not me. Something has to change. As always, there was a lot more ‘G’ in this particular festival than there was LBT+.

Chuffed to Bits: My Latest London Lessons Learned From a Recent Trip
I recently returned from my third trip to London—my second trip there in the past 6 months. And even though I was only there for a few days this time, it was long enough to make my heart ache once again with a deep and serious yearning for the city and the country I love so dearly.
The Top 5 Reasons You Should Watch "The Graham Norton Show"
I love Graham Norton. And I mean love. I’ve never laughed so hard whilst watching any chat show in my life; I’ve actually had coughing fits from watching the hilarity that ensues! And this charming, funny, flamboyant, brilliant chap hailing from Cork, Ireland doesn’t just make great telly. He makes me want to hang out with him. Graham is my imaginary celebrity gay boyfriend. I adore him.
Chuffed to Bits: A Love Song for Bobby Long
Bobby Long at Club Congress, 5th of February, 2011. Photo by DeAnna Soth. When I recently mentioned to a dear friend of mine that I’d named this column Chuffed to Bits, she looked a bit perplexed. After I explained to her what that particular saying means, she suggested that perhaps I offer up a brief explanation for those who may not be familiar with the term. So here goes. As any English person will tell you, to be “chuffed to bits” means to be extremely delighted and pleased about something.
