“Why Not Minot?”: Diving into Minot's Perception Problem-Collom's Column
Perception - the ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses. Why define this? Because in recent years, Minot has suffered its own version of "death by a thousand paper cuts." A string of small controversies, missteps, and failed projects, none of which are catastrophic on their own, have slowly eroded public confidence.
Health care legislation will improve access, affordability for North Dakotans
By: Ben Hanson North Dakotans want to keep their family members and the state’s workforce healthy. When health care isn’t prioritized, small issues can quickly turn into large problems and treatable conditions can become life-threatening, such as late-stage cancer. When the time comes to make an appointment, everyone wants the same things: simplicity, accessibility and affordability.

The Dunseith Debacle: Letters to the Governor
Minot, ND – The Dunseith Debacle has consumed a considerable amount of my time over the past few months and has likely been the most significant story I’ve covered at The Dakotan during my time here. To summarize the situation as concisely as possible: businessman Charles Hoefer purchased the former Benchmark chip manufacturing facility in Dunseith, ND.

True Tale from Dakota Territory
A story that captured the attention of newspaper readers all across the United States had an unbelievable ending in North Dakota, then Dakota Territory. The year was 1877, one year after the defeat of Lt. Colonel George Custer and five companies of the vaunted 7th Cavalry at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The Nez Perce, led by legendary Chief Joseph, fled their reservation land near Walla Walla, Washington after months of mistreatment by a corrupt Indian Agent.

Value as a Military Spouse
by By: Amy Allender I entered life as a military spouse with great naivety. I expected deployments, but I didn’t expect the profound challenges the military lifestyle would present for my faith and self-worth. Twelve years ago, I was a newlywed, 22-year-old Air Force wife. The long hours my husband was putting in as a second lieutenant left me lonely and adrift. He was living his dream of becoming an Air Force pilot. I, however, was completely upended.
10 Tips for Growing Your Professional Circle Without Networking Meetings
When someone tells me that an event could be a “…good networking opportunity…” my palms get sweaty and I feel a little sick to my stomach. I’ve never been good at schmoozing or selling things or bragging on myself in anything other than sarcastic tones. At said “networking opportunities” my usually charming personality goes out the window and I start telling awkward jokes, using bad puns and find myself talking just a little too loud.
7 Do's and Don'ts For Setting Up Your Home Office - StartUp Mindset
Over the last seven years, I’ve started and stopped businesses in four states, working out of my home in each location. Every time I packed up shop I hoped I could retain some clients long-distance, but that usually wasn’t plausible. The artistic design (photo, video, graphic and web design) services I offer and my personality typically shine most when I can work face to face with a client. That just means with each move my business typically starts over. A new search for clients.
45 Customer Focused Social Media Post Ideas
A successful business knows and interacts with its customer base. That may mean you have lots of face to face time with customers in a brick-and-mortar store front, but in our age of digital relationships, it also means you need to be interacting with your customers online. This happens by building a strong brand, having a stellar website, and through your presence on social media. Your business should enjoy social media, embrace it, and view it as a valuable (and free!!) marketing tool.
5 Things That Should Always Be Included in Your Site's "About Us" Page - StartUp Mindset

Whether that is your physical presence in a brick-and-mortar store front, on social media or on your website—your presence is key to attracting customers, gaining customer loyalty and ultimately earning income. Since you will not always be able to be physically present with each and every one of your customers, crafting a effective and compelling “About” page is vital to your business and your brand.
Why Entrepreneurs Shouldn't Be Afraid of Making a Mistake - StartUp Mindset
Let me set the scene for you. It’s a few days before Christmas, my husband and I are en route to visit family in our home state of Indiana. It’s a long haul from North Dakota, so we stop over at a hotel for the night. I’d worked in the car to finish up a graphic design piece for a client—a piece that I’d assured them I’d submit that night. The holiday traffic was brutal, we ended up getting to our hotel late—well after business hours. I open my lap top, it searches for wifi but comes up empty. Again.
