Amy Hannah Johnston

Amy Hannah Johnston of Fredericksburg, VA, is a retired Brigadier General who dedicated over thirty years to a distinguished career in the U.S. Army. Raised in Edina, MN, and Findlay, OH, her upbringing in the Upper Midwest instilled in her a strong work ethic and a deep commitment to service and community. These values have guided her throughout her military career and her post-service endeavors.

During her time in the military, Amy Hannah held various humanitarian and combat deployment roles in strategic locations worldwide. She served in Seoul, Korea, and Mons, Belgium. She took on key staff positions at United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command, Korea, and the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), the military headquarters for NATO's Allied Command Operations. In addition to her military duties, she is currently an advisor for the Center for Information, Democracy, and Citizenship at the American University in Bulgaria, where she contributes to strengthening democracy globally.

A significant part of her life’s work involves honoring the memory of her late husband, Major General Gary W. Johnston, a distinguished Military Intelligence Officer who passed away unexpectedly. She established the Gary Johnston Leadership Award at Arkansas Tech University in his honor. The award continues to recognize individuals who exemplify leadership and integrity, qualities that her late husband embodied throughout his career.

Amy Johnston's education has played a vital role in her military success. She attended Ohio State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, a field that has always intrigued her due to its focus on human behavior. After completing her undergraduate studies, she pursued a master’s in Communications at the American University in Washington, DC. These academic pursuits gave her valuable insight into human motivations and a better understanding of large organizations, knowledge that proved essential in her military career. Her educational journey continued as she earned an M.S. in National Resource Strategy with an Information Operations Concentration from the Eisenhower School’s Industrial College at the National Defense University in Washington, DC. Amy also graduated from the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, marking an essential step in her becoming a commissioned officer.

Throughout her military career, Brigadier General (Ret.) Amy Hannah held numerous senior-level positions that leveraged her exceptional communication skills. She earned recognition for her ability to engage in strategic-level operations across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Her deployments included humanitarian and combat roles in various conflict zones. One of her significant contributions came during Operation Sea Signal in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, where she assisted Cuban and Haitian migrants seeking political asylum. She also played a pivotal role in the success of Joint Task Force All-American after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, helping to coordinate search and rescue operations and disaster relief efforts.

Amy’s service continued in the Middle East. She contributed to Operation Enduring Freedom in Kandahar, Afghanistan, at the time of the 9/11 attacks, and later, to Operation Iraqi Freedom, where she served in Baghdad, Iraq, alongside a multinational coalition of forces. These deployments were critical in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and during the subsequent years of conflict and stabilization efforts in Iraq. Throughout her military career, she demonstrated leadership, resilience, and a commitment to the mission, which earned her respect among her peers and subordinates.

In addition to her combat and humanitarian deployments, Amy Johnston also served as the Chief of Army Public Affairs. In this role, she made significant organizational changes to the Army’s strategic communications at the Pentagon in Washington, DC. She was also the senior Public Affairs Officer for the Supreme Headquarters, Allied Powers Europe in Belgium, and the Senior Public Affairs Officer for U.S. Forces in South Korea.

Amy’s passion for service extends beyond her military career. She remains an active community advocate in Fredericksburg, VA. As a board member of Tree Fredericksburg, she works to promote the state's tree canopy and expand urban green spaces. She is particularly proud of her involvement in her community's upcoming Middle School construction project, where she plans to assist with landscaping efforts. Amy is also a dedicated environmental activist, helping to ensure that her community remains vibrant and green for future generations.

Another aspect of Amy’s community service that brings her great pride is her work with her therapy dog, Duke. Together, they serve with the Alliance for Therapy Dogs, providing therapeutic outreach to active and retired Virginia military personnel. This role allows her to support her fellow veterans and contribute to their emotional well-being, continuing her lifelong dedication to helping others.
