“Look at me and be appalled, and lay your hand upon your mouth.” Job 21:5 I have devoted the better part of the last ten years of my career to studying the Book of Job. Saint Jerome once compared interpreting Job to trying to catch an eel barehanded, saying, “If you close your hand to hold an eel or a little muraena, the more you squeeze it the sooner it escapes.” Job is difficult to grasp. I see in this enigmatic text an abundance of wisdom for the craft and theological practice of preaching.
