Jubilarians are living witnesses of religious life and its Spirit-led changes Original
Looking at those front rows, I found myself reflecting on decades of prayer, ministry, service and fidelity lived one day at a time. Each of these women had once said yes to a call whose future she could not fully imagine. Ours is a community nourished by the Eucharist and by the witness of the Dominican sisters who came before us — women who mentored us in faith and handed on the rich inheritance of our tradition.
Advent lessons from my mother
Sr. Ana González's mother, Ana Michel, makes piñatas (Courtesy of Ana González) I learned behavior and attitudes from my first teacher, my mother. She instilled in me a joy of life, my love for my faith, and quirky expressions that I cannot shake off. She also modeled an urgent need to get things done quickly or de volón pimpon. Grass never, ever grew under her feet, and she was always doing something. Naturally, the behavior modeled by my mother became an ingrained trait in me.
With smell of gas in the air, she targets Latina leaders on Laudato Si'
The movement, founded in 2015, the unison of the Paris Agreement and Laudato Si', aims to educate and motivate the Catholic community to care for our common home and work toward climate and ecological justice. Animators propel the program forward. While mindful practices of Laudato Si' in the United States are scarce, faith communities are engaging in programs propelled by the Laudato Si' Movement and the Laudato Si' Action Platform. But Treviño remains confident in the slow and steady process.
This Jubilee Year, let us be pilgrims open to a journey with God
A marker is pictured along the road leading to Santiago de Compostela, Spain. In 2021, Ana González walked the Camino de Santiago, the pilgrimage through Spain also known as the Way of St. James. (Courtesy of Ana González) I began 2025 with abundant gratitude for the experiences of the past year and anticipation for the unfolding of new adventures. As I reflected on my resolutions and dreams, an exciting awareness surfaced.
Yes, sisters do play sports
As summer winds down, I want to take a moment to reminisce on the season's beauty. The warm weather is a vibrant invitation for many to participate in summer activities and camps and wind down with the warmer southern winds. For many sisters, the summer season brings congregational gatherings and invitations to participate in various activities celebrating our relationship with God.
Encountering the Jesus of Good Friday and glimpsing the kingdom of God Original
As an undergrad, I made it a habit to listen to the news at all times, read the paper once a day, and make the commitment to stay informed. A shift took place in 2018, and from being informed and in touch, I became alarmed and detached. It is not the news or social media's fault. At the time, I became hyper-focused on the betrayal, injustice and abuse reported in the news and showcased in social media. I found myself getting rattled up and perturbed to the point of losing my sleep.
Easter Sunday: Doing the work of Easter
March 31 — the end of another calendar month — ushers in a season of profound hope as Christians everywhere celebrate Easter, the commemoration of Christ's resurrection. Many times Easter and the Jewish feast of Passover overlap, but not this year. Easter symbolizes new life and often coincides with the spring season in the Northern Hemisphere. Springtime, a season of rejuvenation and rebirth, reminds us that before new life can emerge, the old must first pass away.
The Passion narrative unfolds in today's news Original
A few years ago, at a Palm Sunday liturgy, we were encouraged to listen to the Passion narrative and place ourselves within the story. Were we the chief priests? Bystanders? Were we accompanying Jesus? What did we hear or see? How did we respond? I remember seeing myself as part of the crowd watching in horror as the scene unfolded. Today, I feel much the same way as I watch the news.
Guadalupe and the hope within 'Now what?'
On my way home in the Boston transit system after a long day, I sat next to a woman who had worked 12 hours and just had a bad day. I looked at her and smiled, allowing an invitation to tell me all about her experience. "It's been a 'Now what?' day," she said. It all started when she set her phone to charge, but the plug did not connect to the wall, so her phone alarm did not sound. She woke up late, and ran behind all morning, arrived late to work and received her first warning.
Head of Benedictine congregation in France gives abbatial blessing to Vermont abbess Original
The abbot president of the Benedictines' Solesmes Congregation in France came to Vermont to give the abbatial blessing to the first abbess of the newly designated Immaculate Heart of Mary Abbey in Westfield. More than 500 people attended the blessing Nov. 11 at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in Newport of Mother Benedict McLaughlin.
Reaffirm our common humanity to face world's challenges Original
Let's reaffirm the idea of common humanity. That's something I heard echoed numerous times during the recent Conrad N. Hilton Foundation's 2023 humanitarian symposium and prize ceremony in Los Angeles, and it bears repeating. I understand that that is an idea that may seem elusive given our present moment.
Hey, sisters: Don’t forget our youth
In my life, I have held a nice collection of jobs and titles: sister, Sister, tour guide and counselor. Of all, my favorite title is "Tia." I love being an aunt. I get such delight and pleasure from my nephews. They are spunky and creative. Being with them gives me so much joy … until they throw a tantrum. Not to brag, but my nephews are simply awesome. One is a dance enthusiast who wants to be a scientist, while the other loves power tools, landscaping and everything mariachi-related.
Wildfires and smoke alerts highlight interconnectedness of global community
I find the commemoration of Holy Trinity Sunday insightful. I am moved by the awareness that our God is one of mutual relationships. I am not a theologian and will not attempt to explain the consubstantial relationship of our triune God. I am, however, a believer that we are invited to participate in a relationship with our God and experience God's creation and love with each other.
Wanted: Prayer and action for immigrant children now!
Growing up on the southern border of the United States — surrounded by friends and family and fed by love and tamales — we celebrated Feb. 2, el Dia de la Candelaria (the feast of the Presentation, or Candlemas) to conclude a season meditating on the infancy of Jesus. From the first day of the season of Advent to Feb. 2, we focused on preparing the way and rejoicing in the birth of Christ. During that season, I thought of how vulnerable baby Jesus is.
