In very preterm infants, early low-dose hydrocortisone (ELH) increases survival without bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), but increases the risk of spontaneous intestinal perforation (SIP) when given concomitantly with indomethacin. Increased risk of intestinal perforation during hydrocortisone therapy is also observed with ibuprofen, another drug used for ductal closure.
