Your local Florida Extension service isn’t just for farmers Original
Think of a county Extension agent, and you might imagine an agricultural specialist standing beside a tractor in a freshly tilled field talking to a farmer about crop rotation. But Extension isn’t just for farmers — it serves all Floridians, including those in urban counties like Pinellas. Andra Johnson At the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS), we meet community challenges whether on the farm, the city or suburb.
Best Area of CT for Investing in a Multi-Family Property?
Hello I have been wondering about multi-family properties, specifically in CT from the NY line to just before Hartford. Are any of those areas worth investing in?
In Florida, even rattlesnakes aren't safe from invasive species -
February 26 – March 3 is National Invasive Species Awareness Week, and UF/IFAS Extension agents and specialists throughout Florida have been raising awareness about invasive species and how we can limit their impact on our state’s economy, our natural ecosystems and our everyday lives. “Snakes! Why did it have to be snakes?” If, like Indiana Jones, you’re not overly fond of snakes, you’re not alone.

This Arbor Day, Plant an Investment in a Greener Future
January 20 is Arbor Day in Florida, and this Friday, Extension offices throughout the state will be hosting tree planting workshops and tree giveaways. Florida gets a jump on national arbor day, which isn’t until April, because this is the time of year when young trees are easiest to transplant in our warmer climate. As with every new thing we plant, timing is key. There are many benefits to planting trees in our backyards, neighborhoods and cities.
Treat trees as infrastructure, not afterthoughts
Trees’ little brothers are shrubs and green groundcover, but their concrete cousins include streets, sidewalks and sewers. On Arbor Day (April 29), we pay homage to trees as work horses, not show horses. They cool urban heat islands, sequester carbon, shelter wildlife and filter stormwater. There’s even been research indicating they reduce car crashes. It’s important to treat trees as infrastructure, not afterthoughts.
How This Book-and-Rum Collaboration Honor “The Ideal Bartender”
You’d be forgiven if you haven’t heard of The Ideal Bartender, a 1917 cocktail tome by Tom Bullock that’s considered the first drinks book published by a Black author/bartender (or at least, from what drinks historians can gather).
This Cocktail Is the Lovechild of a Vesper and an Aviation
This cocktail by Andra Johnson, a bartender at Bresca in Washington, D.C., and co-founder of DMV Black Restaurant Week, is the lovechild of a Vesper and an Aviation. Using Salers instead of the Lillet in a Vesper lends a spicy note, while vodka gives textural richness that offsets gin, which can be astringent and lean. “By using a grain spirit that has more viscosity, it coats the palate, leaving behind a lingering finish instead of a quick, dry one,” says Johnson.
Why can’t traffic lights be timed better?
It is said there are two certainties in life: death and taxes. In St. Cloud, there is one more: You can be sure to hit all the lights red when driving through town. You will go from one red light to another … and another. Add rush hour to improperly synced lights and you can wait for two or three cycles before getting through. And, just when you get up to speed, the next light changes to red, triggered by the lone car a block away on a side street.
