Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

It doesn't really count as a journalist. But during Jane Byrne's campaign for Mayor in Chicago (a lifetime ago) I wrote letters to editors.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes

How is social media changing news?

For good: news is more instant, can minimize corporate influence. For bad: too much opinion, poor analysis, lack of fact-checking.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

It's a tie between Sarah Jane Smith and Stephen Colbert.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To observe situations, analyze the implications, and share that analysis with others in writing while trying to eliminate one's own biases.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

I don't know if it was funny per se, but I did get a kick out of Hijacking Al-Queda (the hashtag itself was in Arabic)

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

As a writer who can take highly complex business concepts and break them down to basics without being simplistic.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Microsoft Word, Joomla, Wordpress, Greenrope, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Dreamweaver

What's your favorite social network?

It's a tie between Facebook and Twitter. They each have their advantages.

Who do you wish followed you?

Rachel Maddow

Why did you become a journalist?

It combines my desire to observe the world as objectively as possible with a desire to help people to think more critically.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Curiously, I don't remember!

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

The How-to-Hire Handbook for Small Business Owners. It raises the bar on both how to hire well, and how to hire ethically.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Work very hard to understand things as they are, and not just as you want them to be.

When's the best time to pitch you?

As long as it's via email, it really doesn't matter.
