Stephen's Green Shopping Centre Jaded Dubliners have had enough of bland, soulless buildings
LAST WEEK, IT was announced that the owners of Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre had received permission from Dublin City Council to go ahead with their plans to redevelop the centre. The public reaction to this decision was not good. Between vox pops and instagram videos, articles and online commentary, the contentious decision provoked strong feelings of frustration amongst the people who Dublin belongs to – its population.
Teen social media ban Protecting kids online shouldn’t mean killing privacy
ON MONDAY, THE UK voted against implementing a social media ban for under-16s. There was the expected knee-jerk hyper moral reaction that is always expected when there are children involved – won’t somebody think of the children? It is very difficult to remove emotion from the conversation when the safety and rights of children are involved, which is completely understandable. Most people want children to be safe and kept away from harm.
The battle to save the city’s nightlife, culture and spaces
THE FIRST ‘NO More Hotels’ protest party took place on the 10th August 2019 to highlight the fact that clubbing was indeed culture — and a culture worth saving. We set it up at the time because we were sick of watching the eradication of places to dance in the city to make way for hotels. As a resident and business owner of Dublin City Centre, I was invested in living in a city that had life, creativity and community at its heart.
Opinion: Christianity is having a resurgence on social media
THERE HAS BEEN a monumental and omnipresent rise in visual support for Christianity amongst young people on social media. Purple cross emojis, psalms and bible verses have been popping up and multiplying in Instagram bios. Many online vehicles are being used to promote religion and faith as something modern and cool, using the language, tactics and digital aesthetics of social media influencers and content creators.
So now it's cost over design for new state buildings? What could possibly go wrong?
LAST WEEK, JACK Chambers, Minister for Public Expenditure, stated that the government will prioritise “cost and efficiency over design standards and aesthetics” when it comes to future infrastructure spending. On the face of it, if you’ve been exposed to the huge budgetary overruns that big infrastructure projects have had recently, pragmatically, that is soothing.
Dublin is being hollowed out to cater for tourists. Here's how to help
Image / Self / Real-life Stories As a business owner in Dublin city centre, Andrea Horan is well-versed in the problems the capital is facing at the moment. From communities being eroded to make way for hotels to a distinct lack of public facilities, affordable housing and creative hubs, the city’s issues are grave and numerous. But, there is hope. In Andrea’s words, “We deserve a city that hums; a city that bustles with life and activity and is open to all.” Dublin is the best place in the world.
If Dublin loses more businesses, it will become a soulless, faded dream
AS NEWS BROKE this week about a number of further closures of hospitality businesses in Dublin city, it was interesting to read interviews in the Irish Times with the owners of restaurants who are surviving in the city. All of which cited tourism as keeping them afloat. It is time to collectively acknowledge the fact that we have hollowed out Ireland’s capital city to make way for tourist business and that it is no longer a place that caters to the people who live in the city. This is not news.
'The feeling is that those with money to spend will only come to town by car'
“A developed country is not a place where the poor have cars. It’s where the rich use public transportation.” ― Gustavo Petro “More people would take public transport if it was reliable. The only way to make it more reliable is to prioritise it on the roads over cars. The argument that we can’t make change until we improve public transport is an infinity loop argument.” I WROTE THAT tweet the other day after getting a bus and a Dart in Dublin for the first time in a long time.
Andrea Horan: Dancing 'til dawn is a valid human pursuit - let's stop being afraid of the night
ON TUESDAY, PROPOSALS to reform Ireland’s licensing laws were finally brought to Cabinet. The main outcome of this legislation, hopefully, approved by Summer 2023, will be that nightclubs will have the option to open till 6 am, pubs can open till 12.30 seven days a week and a new Night-Time Advisor Pilot initiative will be established.

Poll: Do you think the lifting of the Covid measures is going at the right pace? THE GOVERNMENT’S PLAN to reopen the country in June and July is the biggest and most significant shift back to normal times since the crisis began. The plans cover everything from pilot outdoor live events with hundreds of attendees in June, to the return of international travel and indoor dining in July.
Andrea Horan: Whose job is it to provide a liveable city?
WHAT HAPPENED AT the weekend on South William Street (the centre of the universe if you’re asking) was inevitable. Anyone who was surprised hasn’t been paying attention. Let’s get the issue of the littering and absolute state of the place out of the way first though. People shouldn’t have left the place like that. Full stop. And it has to be said the cleanup operation by Dublin City Council’s team was phenomenal. Was it ideal for such a big crowd to gather in one place during a pandemic?
