Seeking justice for Kumanjayi White
Last week, in a supermarket aisle in Alice Springs, a young man was killed by two police officers in “plain clothes”. Kumanjayi White was 24 and declared dead an hour or so after the arrest. He is reported to have been caught attempting to place food items under his jumper and having an altercation with a security guard in the shop. Other reports suggest he had a disability and was living in assisted accommodation, apparently under the guardianship system.

Ivan Milat, tribal law, and making my father proud - Andrew Boe's story
When Andrew was a young boy, he and his parents and four brothers migrated from Burma to Queensland. They left a life of privilege and landed in a working class suburb in Brisbane. Andrew’s father expected all his sons to achieve great things in this new world. By his mid-twenties Andrew had his own criminal law practice. But although he had the expensive suit and flash watch, Andrew still had a lot to learn about how the law worked, especially for vulnerable people.
The truth and Andrew Boe
Andrew Boe has seen a lot during his thirty years working as a criminal lawyer. During that time he has represented high profile offenders like Ivan Milat, Pauline Hanson and David Eastman. But he has also represented numerous criminals who he believes are not treated equally before the law because they are Indigenous, women, homeless, poor or have mental health issues.
Searching for the truth in Yuendumu
On the second Tuesday in November 2019, I sat down to have lunch with my editor, Meredith Rose. This was the first opportunity we’d had to meet, after months of work over the phone and in electronic dispatches. Just two days earlier, news had broken of the shooting of Kumanjayi Walker in Yuendumu, and we were talking of this when my phone buzzed with an email: Hi Andrew, I am of the understanding that you assisted the Palm Island Council on the Cameron Doomadgee case.
