Rare Earth Showdown
Why the West Must Learn To Pick Winners – and Partners
Rare Earth Showdown
Why the West Must Learn To Pick Winners – and Partners Albanese must convince Trump that only allied cooperation can break China’s rare earth chokehold. Last week, China rolled out sweeping new export controls, expanding earlier measures that targeted Rare Earth Elements (REEs) to now include the technologies used in their extraction and refining – an apparent bid to kneecap nascent Western efforts to develop alternatives.
Australia relationship has never been better
This friendship and trust is exemplified by our upgrading to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in March 2024, an agreement which demonstrates the ambition we both hold for a stable, prosperous, and peaceful future. Andrew Goledzinowski, Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Underpinning our relationship is our development cooperation. There are physical signs of Australia’s development commitment across Vietnam.
Over 50 years of cooperation creates relationship of trust and mutual respect
Eras of genuine policy and structural reform are rare. But when they do occur, they are often followed by long periods of rapid economic growth. This was Australia’s experience after the reforms of the late 1980s and early 1990s. In Vietnam also, the late 1980s were a period of bold change - change that established the conditions for decades of success.

The relation is a driver of prosperity that binds our region together, making it a global economic powerhouse and political center of gravity.
Hanoi: Vibrant and deeply historical city
The location on the banks of the Red River equips Hanoi an ample access to trade routes while keeping its centuries-long culture. Hanoi is a wonderful, vibrant, and deeply historical city, that has shown remarkable economic growth and is increasingly attractive to foreign traders and investors as a center of commerce. Challenges that have shaped 2020 | New Straits Times
In Australia, this year started badly - and then it got worse.
A helpful friend from Down Under
WITHOUT doubt, we will look back on 2020 as one of the most challenging years in our lifetimes. The pandemic has wreaked havoc with lives, livelihoods and our health, and kept many of us apart. But we’ll also look back on it as a year that has in many ways brought us closer together. Malaysia is already one of Australia’s closest partners in Southeast Asia. Our bilateral relationship has never been stronger, notwithstanding the impact of Covid-19 in 2020.
Claims by rare earths opponents need to be examined
I am responding to Dennis Ignatius’ piece, “Lynas: Profits, politics and people”, in FMT today. The Malaysian government’s decision on the renewal of the Lynas Malaysia operating licence, and the future of the rare earths industry in Malaysia, is due to be announced soon. This, hopefully, will finally give certainly to all concerned, not least the thousands of Malaysians whose employment is at stake.
