Paralyzed below hips, Ciarlo Liples has become La Salle men's basketball team's "brother"
La Salle University was introduced to Ciarlo Liples by Team IMPACT, an organization that pairs children with disabilities with sports teams. Ciarlo has since become an inspirational part of the program and has traveled with the Explorers wherever they go. Ciarlo was born with spina bifida and is paralyzed below his hips, but nothing can keep him from the game he loves. "Whenever someone asks me, 'What's my happy place?' I say any basketball court," Ciarlo said.
How WNBA star Kahleah Copper is helping the La Salle women's basketball team grow
While La Salle women's basketball is in the middle of a rough season, a recent postgame speech from a WNBA star has helped the team grow. "I don't remember actually if I told them or not, but I knew they were coming," La Salle women's basketball head coach Mountain MacGillivray said. "Within one second of the game starting, I spotted her, and I freaked out," La Salle guard Sania Jenkins said. When La Salle hosted Rider earlier this season, WNBA star Kahleah Copper was on hand. "North Philly's own.
How does the St. Joe's Hawk mascot flap his wings 3,500 times a game? "It's my love of St. Joe's"
We're always interested in the person behind the costume — Bruce Wayne, Peter Parker, Tony Stark. At St. Joseph's University is a mascot with the strength to flap its wings continuously for hours, in front of friends and foes alike. Here's all that goes into being the St. Joe's Hawk. "To become the Hawk, you first have to fill out the application, and then from there you also have to film a video showing off your 'flap-titude,'" said Michael Sorochen, the current man behind the mask.
Eric Dixon, heart and soul of the Villanova men's basketball team, is destined for the NBA
Is Eric Dixon destined for the NBA? Villanova basketball coach Kyle Neptune believes so Eric Dixon is 6 feet 8 inches tall, 265 pounds and has the green light to shoot the ball. The Villanova graduate student forward is the nation's leading scorer in men's college hoops and he's working to become one of the all-time great Wildcats. "I try not to think about it," Dixon said. "Obviously, you see it everywhere, I try to ignore it.
Penn State-Oregon Big Ten Championship Game reignites family tradition for fans
It's like planes, trains and automobiles — except for college football. As No. 3 Penn State readies for the Big Ten Championship Game Saturday against No. 1 Oregon at Lucas Oil Stadium, fans are doing whatever they can to get to Indianapolis, Indiana. For some fans, a trip to Indy for the Big Ten title game is a chance to reignite family traditions. Philadelphia International Airport looks more like Happy Valley as fans take to the air.
Kris Jenkins finds form off bench in Villanova's win over St. John's
It was only a one-game thing, Jay Wright insisted. With Kris Jenkins struggling, Wright opted to start Eric Paschall in his star senior’s place for Saturday night’s game against St. John’s. And the Villanova coach was thrilled to see how Jenkins responded with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists in the fourth-ranked Wildcats’ 92-79 win over St. John’s on Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center. “I thought he was great,” Wright said. “Exactly how we wanted him to play.
St. Joe's 'just wasn't good enough' in 2OT loss to Fordham
It looked like St. Joe's senior Lamarr Kimble was going to come up clutch yet again for the Hawks. After all, he was the reason St. Joe's forced two overtimes against Fordham. With 7 seconds remaining in double-overtime, Kimble knocked down two big free throws to knot the game at 83. Fordham’s Antwonie Anderson answered back for the Rams (10-13, 4-6 A-10), hitting a game-winning three as time expired to send St. Joe's (10-12, 3-7 A-10) to an 86-83 double-overtime loss Saturday night at Hagan Arena.
Instant Replay: No. 4 Villanova 92, St. John's 79
Josh Hart had 26 points and nine rebounds, Donte DiVincenzo scored a career-high 20 points and No. 4 Villanova beat St. John's 92-79 on Saturday night. Kris Jenkins added 15 points for the Wildcats (22-2, 9-2 Big East), who have won three in a row since a 74-72 loss at Marquette on Jan. 24. Mikal Bridges had 14 points and Jalen Brunson finished with 12. Marcus LoVett led St. John's (11-14, 5-7) with 23 points, and Bashir Ahmed had 15 points and seven rebounds before fouling out with 8:18 left.
Shorthanded La Salle can't contain hot-shooting George Mason in loss
Short-handed La Salle couldn’t keep up with the hot shooting of George Mason in a 95-75 loss at EagleBank Arena Saturday night. The Explorers’ matchup with the Patriots got a lot tougher earlier this week. The team’s leading scorer B.J. Johnson suffered a foot injury in practice. With Pookie Powell unable to return from a leg injury and missing his fourth straight game, two of the Explorers top three scorers were only spectators. The two are averaging a combined 31.2 points per game.
